Not so much on the eating and exercise and such side though...Here's the scoop:

I was dx'd a bit over a year ago and I'm still doing well. However, my SIL's MIL (got that one?lol) was just told that her blood sugar is high and she was handed a meter and they showed her how to use it. But that's ALL they told her! They also told her to go take a class at the local hospital which she's going to do. In the meantime, though, she's scared, confused, etc. not knowing what it all means or where to turn. I've given her a bunch of info and directed her to both the ADA and Joslin websites which has been helpful for her.

Now to the topic at hand: when I was diagnosed, I hit the web, the bookstores/library, *this board*, etc and got LOTS of information then set up a spreadsheet to track what I ate and how my blood sugar reacted and all. Lots and Lots of Data. Having that knowledge helped me feel more like I was in control of the situation rather than being a victim. I took as my "mantra" a quote from 1 Corinthians 10:23 "'Everything is permissible'—but not everything is beneficial." I can *choose* to eat a box of chocolates BUT it's is not a good choice and the short and long term repercussions of it are not what I choose. Having a sense of choice rather than deprivation is important for me (might not be as important for others).

So, what I'd like to know from y'all is what tips, tricks, mantras, etc have been helpful to you to get from the initial shock, denial, fear, anger to acceptance and moving forward managing the situation.

Nancy,

It is not going to help to postpone your appointment. You knew I would say that didn't you. I think it is better to just own up to what has been going on.

I am really sorry to ready about your aunt and uncle. I know how it feels to not be told about a death like this. When my last aunt died no one bothered to tell sis or me about it. The cousins have never told us why they didn't tell us. It is hard to have closurer this way.

I do know that you will start eating better when you can start growing your own veggies. My green beans are going gangbusters and the peas and Swiss cahart have all germinated. Looks like I am going to have a great garden this year. Here's keeping my fingers crossed.

Please feel better about yourself and the world around you.

In 2001 I discovered I had blood sugar levels of close to 500 (normal 140). My heart had expanded, blood pressure was very high, and I was very irritable all the time. If you have Diabetes Milletus, Here is what I recommend: 1) start your medication immediately, 2) adopt the lifestyle changes that your doctor recommends including dietary changes, 3) In addition, eat low carb, low fat, low starch, zero glucose, zero cheese, and lots of high fibre and greens, 4) eat no more than 80 % of your hunger 4) preferably eat four or five small meals a day instead of three big ones 5) follow your exercise routine without fail 5) reduce stress levels by learning meditation 6) go to your nearest Art of Living foundation center and start their breathing exercise routines immediately and do it everyday. I did all of these and today my blood sugar levels are within 140 at all times since at least one year. I feel great and I love life again. Whether you have diabetes or not. For any ailment the Art of Living Foundation breathing exercises are said to be good. According to my research, those breathing exercises push oxygen to the remotest parts of your organs and revistalize them, improving function and efficiency. I hope this helps all diabetes patients.

Lynn,

Did you see the article this week about diabetics with arthritis? Seems like 60% of diabetics have arthritis which makes it very hard for them to exercise. I know that my arthritis is better when I can exercise. Walking doesn't always work for me but I am still going to Curves 4-5 times per week.
