I was just diagnosed

I didn't think about that even being part of the blood test I had done, so the call today was a complete shock. My blood sugar was at 196 and should be less than 110? That sounds really high to me. Right now, I'm trying to process it all. I have a strong family history of both type 1 and type 2, I had gestational diabetes with my youngest, and I'm overweight, so it shouldn't be a shock...I just didn't expect to hear it, you know what I mean? I didn't see my doctor for that, I saw her for headaches. I'm reading now, trying to figure out what I should do next.

Hello, and welcome! I'm new here, too, though not new to diabetes. I'm almost 20years old and I've had type 1 for almost 20 years. You definatly need a blood glucose monitor, and you should follow your Dr's advice on when and how often to check, but as a rule, you shoud probably check it at least before every meal so you can determine how much to eat. I know it can be overwhelming (I don't remember being diagnosed, but I still get overwhelmed), but being healthy will make you feel so much better. And, getting your numbers under control may stop the headaches :)
Hi and wlecome to the board. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse.
Headaches is one of the lesser symptoms of diabetes. The more common symptoms are eating alot, drinking a lot of liquids and going to the bathroom at lot. There are actually 10 things which are symptoms of diabetes.
How much metformin did your doctor start you on? Did he or she give you detailed instructions about how to take this medication? In a nutshell, I hope the physician started you on a low dose and you must take it with food in your stomach.
When you get your A1C reading please tell me what it was. I'll try to explain to you better what is going on.
Hi, Mary Frances:)
I was put on 500mg of metformin daily, taken with my main meal. As far as the main 3 symptoms-they went unnoticed-I was eating for comfort, or so I thought, and I've carried around a big glass of water or soda for the last 6 yrs. I got into the habit when I nursed my kids, and never stopped. Soda of course was after weaning the baby :P. The bathroom trips went along with the drinking. I totally ignored all of it. When I went in for the headaches, I just wanted to find out what caused it. Diabetes was the last thing on my mind. And thank you-I'll let you know what it is when I get it, I'm trying to find as much info as I can. I didn't even ask about checking my sugar level daily-I said 'mmm, ok' through the rest of the conversation with my doctor, lol.
Hi,
I was looking at your siggy. You had three children in 01? I noticed that you are trying to lose weight. The best thing that your doctor could do for you now is to refer you to a dietitian who specializes in diabetes. I am absolutely amazed at how people lose weight when they start eating in a diabetic style. A modest weight loss of 10-20 pounds can bring your diabetes under control. Incidentally we don't call it a diabetic diet anymore because it is a life style change and not something that you start and stop like a diet.
