Hi

I hope some one can help me.  I don't have diabetes but I was just dx with peripheral neuropathy.  Right now Birkenstocks are the only shoe I can wear semi comfortably.

Does anyone have a recommendation for shoes for exercising/walking.

Thank you.

Hi Dana,

There are specific shoes made for diabetic neuropathy but they are very expensive and hard to find. I suggest that you go to a shoe store which advertises "comfort" shoes. These are more likely to have old fashioned shoe sales people who know how to fit shoes so that they don't rub or pinch. You need a shoe with a larger toe box.

I would also suggest that you check your feet daily like diabetics are supposed to do. You want to make sure that you don't have any injuries which often you don't feel the injury when it occurs. You should always make a practice of wearing shoes and not going barefoot. Wash your feet with warm soapy water and dry well. Use lotion as necessary to keep the skin healthy and soft.

I like New Balance shoes for athletic wear but I wear different manufactures. I have never tried Birkenstocks but they are very good shoes. I frequently wear Mephistos. It all depends upon the shoe and if I can get my orthodics in it or not.
