Just looking for a few opinions on my problem. ANY advice/info would be greatly appreciated!!!! I've been to the pregnant and diabetic board, but I haven't found anyone with out of control #'s like mine.
Okay, so I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes in early March and even after following the "diet" I was given, I needed to put on insulin. But, after a month of insulin, more insulin, and even MORE insulin....doc tells me I'm insulin resistant. My #'s before insulin were anywhere from 170's to almost 200. WITH insulin, my fasting #'s are still from 130's to 160's (after breakfast isn't much better), and after lunch and dinner range from about 115 - 140's. Basically, insulin helps, but not nearly enough. Then doc changed my insulin from humulin N and R to novolog and .... levimer (? sorry I'm not sure what it's called), but I think it's synthetic and supposedly stronger acting. This is day #3 and no change :o( Here's what worries me: Four weeks ago, my baby measured at 4 pounds, 2 weeks ago he was at 5 pounds, and now this past visit he measured at 6lbs. 11 oz.!!!! I STILL have 4 1/2 weeks left to go, and I know babies of non-diabetic Moms can gain a pound per week (making my baby about 11-12 pounds)....I'm afraid because of my uncontrolled #'s, he'll gain even more!
Is there anything else that can help me? Dropping carbs from each meal? Having no carb snacks? Can my baby really be like 15 pounds at birth? Can you tell I'm stressing out?
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR TIME!!!!

First of all, congrats on your pregnancy!

One of the best ways to reduce insulin resistance is exercise - but when you're carrying around a big ole bowling ball in your middle, that's not all that enticing a prospect :-) Anything you can comfortably and safely do - walking around the yard, the block, the mall (bathrooms, level surface, and climate controlled) can help. I'm not pregnant but I know that my numbers start creeping up if I go more than 2 days without my regular exercise - even if I'm eating exactly the same meals and snacks and all. Rule of thumb is 150 minutes per week of some sort of aerobic exercise, preferably 20-30 minutes at a time.
Good luck and all the best for you and the lil bubba

Hi Melissa,
I am sorry you are having such a hard time and I really do hope that your baby doesn't gain too much weight. I also hope that they have a peri-natologist ready to care for your baby when he arrives.
Your doctor has put you on a long acting insulin as well as short acting. Levamir is a newer long acting insulin specifically developed for over weight type 2 diabetics. It is possible that you need to have the dosage increased. One of things that the doctors are trying to balance is the amount of insulin you need and not too much for your developing baby. As you have discovered this is pretty difficult. If your baby gets too much insulin, he will gain too much weight.
I do think that you need to carefully watch your carbs and get some gentle exercise. I would suggest that you go for walks but make sure you take some carbs with you and that you test your blood sugar before going. You really don't want to participate in vigorous exercise this late in your pregnacy.
How often are you being seen by your doctor? Are they doing stress testing on you yet? I know that you have posted that they are planning on doing a c-section on you. When are they planning to delivery your son?
I am sorry I can't give you more information than this. Please keep us informed about how both of you are doing.
Thank you, Mary, for all of the very helpful info you have given me!!!!
They have me scheduled for
Melissa,
Yes, that is the stress test that I was referring to. Plus they will also test to make sure his lungs are fully developed. It looks like the docs are doing all they can to monitor your pregnancy and make it successful. The only other person you will need is the high risk pefiatrician to manage munchin once he arrives.
Were you diabetic before your pregnancy? I am wondering if you are going to be diabetic afterwards and certainly that is a possibility if you can't get your weight back down to normal aftrer the delivery. How old is Morgan? Were gestational diabetic with her?
