Jury Duty

I got a paper in the mail for jury summons. There is no way of knowing ahead of time if they will call me in, but in the meantime, I have to fill out a questionnaire. One question was in regards to health and if there is a problem preventing me from serving and if so, I need a doctor's excuse. Do you think diabetes is one of them? Right now I am doing this by diet alone, but if I don't eat every three hours or so, I get low sometimes. My husband said that if I am selected to come in, that I should just take food with me, but I don't know if I am allowed to do this. Any suggestions? Anyone have jury duty? I don't know how they work with you on this issue like if you can eat at any certain time. I was a juror in the 1980's and I don't remember eating except I think they brought bagels in at one point. I need to get the questionnaire in in a few days so I could use some help; thanks so much.

Deb,

I have been summoned for jury duty regularly and have served. I find that they takes sufficent breaks that I don't have a problem. I carry glucerna snack bars in my purse. Where we go for jury duty there is a snack bar and we can purchase things there including hot coffee and bottled water. In California diabetes isn't one of the things that will get you excused automatically. I personally feel it is such a honor to serve that I want to make it work. This is what keeps our system honest. There have been some cases that I was really glad I was selected for but that is another matter.

Thank you everyone for your response. I will do that with the food and I think I will also call them just to make sure how they do it with breaks and such here in Pennsylvania. I guess on the form I can put that I don't have anything to keep me from serving, but that I do have diabetes, but can still serve. I served once before and I thought it was really interesting. Like I said, they might not even call me in. Thanks everyone!

LOL!!! Misty, they didn't want to deal with your needing to go the bathroom all the time!! In fact I saw that one time when a woman told the judge that she was pregnant with morning sickness and she was excused immediately.

I was called for a case involving a homeless man. I was seated and the judge kept asking what I do and who I worked with, etc. I explained that I do homeless case management and who I work for. I didn't even get the chair warm before I was bounced out of the jury. To my surprise it was the defense that bounced me. I would have thought that the DA wouldn't want me. I left chuckling!!

I would not be surprised if that same thing happened to me.
