Wow! An hour and a half talking to a diabetes nurse, and my mind is fried. I'm going to be changing pretty much everything. From how much insulin, when, where injected and type of syringes. I was trying to take in all the info and keep my DD happy at the same time. It's going to take a while to remember everything she told me.
I'll be using a pen for Humalog now, which is great. It sounds much easier, and smaller needles. I'm increasing my Lantus to 50 units 2x a day. Maybe more, if my fasting is still too high. I'm going to be taking short acting probably 5 times a day or more, depending on what my sugars are. I'll be testing 7-10 times a day instead of just my fasting. I've been using long needle syringes, but now only short, and microfine mini's with the pen.
I will be needing to eat more often, she said try not to go more than 2 hours without eating something. My Ob said I should be increasing my calories since I'm in 3rd trimester now, and I really haven't increased my food intake since becoming pregnant. I only gained 3 pounds this past month, which I thought was great. But if I eat more....even if it's not a whole lot more carbs...my sugar will go up and I'll be taking more insulin regardless.
I feel almost like my whole life will be consumed by eating, testing and injecting. Three more months until the baby is born, and I hope I don't have to continue to be as agressive as I am now.
I just had to vent that a little, my mind is still reeling! BUT, good news....my fasting this morning was 124 down from 196-224 the previous few days! I did have a big low about 11:30 last night though...woke up in a cold sweat and had to get up and eat. I was very weak and shaky, could hardly stand up. I guess it went down too fast.

Thanks for the update Misty!
Thanks Cheryl!

Misty,
I am so thankful that you have finally gotten your sugars down to a more normal level. Whatever it takes!
I will be interested to see how you like the pen. My doctor has switched me over to the pen for my symlin but they haven't arrived yet. I have never used a pen but it shouldn't be that difficult. Just something different to get used to!
Will have future appointments with the CDE?
I have begun to keep some diabetic bars in my bathroom so that I don't have to walk very far to get one when I need it. Perhaps you should keep one on your bedside table or head board. It is horrible to wake up with a low because it seems that you don't wake up before it is really low.
Happy Mother's Day.
In real life, often when I'm asked how I am, my response will be...
Would you need more insulin with high calorie/fat foods like cheeses and nuts? I don't know - I'm not on insulin - but it might be worth it to try to fit those in, protein, fat, calories (and maybe a little fiber with nuts) and low in carbs to maybe not increase the insulin or blood sugar too much.

I am curious how I'll like the pen also.
