Question about Morning Numbers
| Wed, 05-21-2008 - 10:56am |
I have not been diagnosed as diabetic, but have been having numerous symptoms. I decided to buy a monitor and keep track of my numbers for a few weeks. My question is this, what numbers would be considered normal? I tested this morning for the first time as soon as I woke up and it was 74. Where does this fall on the overall scale? What is an average timetable for testing and what should the numbers be?

Rule of thumb numbers according to the Association of Clinical Endocrinologists are:
<110 pre meal (includes first thing in the morning before breakfast) (so your a.m. reading is okay)
<180 1 hr post meal
<140 2 hrs post meal
The ADA guidelines are slightly different:
70-130 before meal (which includes first thing before breakfast)
<180 2 hrs after meal
You'll want to be monitoring carbohydrate intake and getting exercise. Exercise is the best way to reduce insulin resistance. You're going to want to talk to a dr if you -think- you're diabetic so you can get proper diagnostic testing (fasting serum glucose, A1C are the two most likely tests). Could be, given that one reading (which is by no means a complete picture) that you are in a pre-diabetic, insulin resistant state. If so, managing your weight, your carb intake, and exercising can help postpone (potentially indefinitely) moving into actual diabetes. The diagnostic criteria for a diabetes diagnosis is testing above 126 in the fasting serum glucose test (usually they'll do this twice with a few weeks in between to make sure it wasn't a fluke). The A1C gives a picture of the last 3 months of blood sugar levels (averaged) by measuring how much glucose is attached onto the red blood cells in your system.

Hi and welcome to the board.
normal fasting blood glucose level is between 70 and 110 g/dl
A value above 140 mg/dl on at least two occasions typically means a person has diabetes.
