Lantus and Novolog
| Mon, 06-23-2008 - 10:18am |
Hello,
My question is I'm a type 2, and I take 25 units of Lantus, and 2 units of
Novolog at meals. My Doctor only wants me to check 4x a day BS. I have been running
around 200 for fasting BS. Even tho my BS's are high. I'm scared to death I'm going to
hit a low. I only do novolog 1x a day. The lowest I've been is 150BS.
Is there any type 2 out here that are on insulin only?
Any sharing of Info would be much appreciated!
Thank-You

I am on Lantus also, but I use Humalog instead of Novolog.

Hi,
Did your doctor tell you to take the Novolag at only one meal? If so, that is unusual. Usually the dose of novolog and other short acting insulins is 1 unit per 17 grams of carbs. If that doesn't control your post eating blood sugar then they usually decrease the number of grams of carbs per unit of insulin.
I don't know how long you have been on this regeme but I do know that you need to talk to your doctor again because you aren't under control yet.
Do carry some glucose tabs with you because even your Lantus can cause hypoglycemia. I know because I am on Lantus also. I also carry some snack side of glucerna bars with me. I like the smaller ones because they don't cause my blood sugar to go too high. I test 3-5 times per day.
Also you need to periodically test 2 hours after eating. The goal is that your blood sugar is not over 140 or more than 40 above where it was before eating. This is a really informative test. Try keeping a log of your blood sugars so that when you see your doctor s/he can tell how you are doing. But at the present time your blood sugar is still too high. You want to get it as close to normal as you can without going too low. This will protect your eyes, kidneys and feed.
Thank you so much for the info,I have peripheral neuropathy as it is. That is why
its not getting better probably. This has been a real battle with my sugar levels.
