fungus rash

I saw my dermatologist 16 days ago for a rash in both arm pits and under my breasts. He said it was a fungus and gave me a salve for it. After 10 days, it was no better, so I saw the doctor again. He took a piece of tissue for a biopsy and put in a few stitches. I go back on July 2nd for results and to have stitches removed. I just saw, on a diabetes site, about fungus infections of the skin. The doctor doesn't seem to know exactly what this is since the salve did not do anything. Could this rash be from diabetes or is it not clearing up because of the diabetes???? How do you get a fungus rash?? It itches too!!! My BS numbers are under control, I eat a healthy diet. Now I can't exercise because the doctor said not to sweat. Any ideas!!!!

Barb,

Are you diabetic and how long have you been diabetic? If you are diabetic I also would suspect a yeast infection instead of a fungus. Funguses are how to treat and get rid of while yeast is easier. Yeast infections are quite common in diabetics. It is because of excess blood sugar available in warm, moist areas. Cornstarch is an old fashioned rememdy that I find works quite well. It is important to keep the area dry.

I hope you feel better soon,

Candidia infections of the skin happen (it's not just 'feminine area yeast infections'). I had one years ago (pre-diagnosis, I'm rather 'full figured' and it was under my breasts and at the tops of my legs during the summer when it was hot and sweaty). My PA said she could prescribe something for me to take but that would mean doing blood tests to make sure my liver didn't get damaged OR I could go get the old fashioned package of monistat that isn't in a pre filled applicator and has a tube of the medication and to just cover the affected area in the cream for several days. It went from scratching myself until I bled because the sting/pain was better than the itching/burning to nothing in about 3 days, and I kept up with the medication until there was no sign of it at all (a few days longer). I also upped my intake of yogurt since the good bacterias there can help fight off the candidia bacteria. Now I keep a tube of the monistat in the medicine cabinet just in case but I haven't had to deal with it in several years.

--Dry off well and do NOT use a corn starch based powder (the fungus can feed on the corn starch - use talc or nothing
--eat yogurt
--try the monistat externally (it can't hurt and it at least contains itch relief)

I have seen warnings NOT to use talc products due to that causing other health problems.

Well, the warnings about talc generally refer to old school stuff that was mined alongside asbestos or something to that effect (had asbestos involved somewhere in there I think if memory is even close...). I just don't bother with powder at all - corn starch and talc aside, the scent even of the unscented kind is just out. Something that works if I need to dry off in a hurry after a shower is a blow dryer on a low or medium low setting (depending on the appliance). Works great and nice and toasty too without being humid.
