Hello my name is Jennifer and I have Gestational Diabetes. I also have a huge family history of type 2 diabetes on both my mother and Fathers side.
I am fairly healthy, I could use to lose about 30 pounds prepregnancy. I have only gained 19 with this PG and I only have a few weeks left to go. At 26 weeks I found out I had Gestational diabetes. I failed the 1 hour by only 6 points but my 3 hour results where a little different. My fasting score was 75, 1 hour reading was 210, 2 hour reading was 198, and three hour reading was 70.
Since finding out about the GD I have controled my numbers with my diet alone. My average fasting numbers are between 74-79, my average 2 hr post meal is between 84-86. But I have controled my diet with a Low GI diet and only eat Whole Grain, lean protien and loads and loads of veggies. I have eaten really no simple carbs. I have actually not had any real desire to cheat since I get to eat 6 times a day.
Well today I ate at lunch more than my normal carb count (not excessive). So instead of my 2 hr I tested at 1 to make sure I didnt over do it. 1 hr was 109, 2 hour 106, and 3 hour was 73. This comes down to the crucks of my question. I know my numbers are within normal limits but with the spike up and the sudden drop back to the 70s does that show any real inclination I will have type 2 after I deliver. My DH thinks I over analyze my numbers and they are within range and I should just move on. I on the other hand am wondering if I should request to see a endocronologist for my follow up after the baby gets here and have them retest. Or am I over reacting and please tell me if I am. I need to hear I am making a mountain out of a mole hill sometimes. I appreciate anyones help!!!

Hi Jennifer,
Welcome to the board. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give you is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.
Congratulations on your pregnancy. We have several members here now who are pregnant and scheduled to deliver about
Thank you very much for the quick response! I appreciate any and all the help I can get.
I am treating the GD as a window into the future and it really has helped me alot. I actually had always looked at my relatives and thought, I will never have Diabetes thats not me. They have a history of heavy drinking and serious obisitey in the 100-150 pounds over weight. My Grandmother alone passed away at over 400 pounds. All the diabetes in my family is type 2 so I ASSUMED I wouldnt get it with my eating habits being what they are. I dont drink, I dont eat sweets, and I dont eat red meats. I dont drink soda ever and my real only spluge is a decaf coffee with soy milk in the morning and sometimes a 2nd one in the afternoon.
But I was surprised to find out what I do eat is alot of the contributing factor and could cause me to become diabetic. I eat LOTS of Fruit, Drink Tons of Juice (gallons of it) I love my milk and soy milk, I eat LOADS of carbs- pasta-bread-potatoes and almost no protien. I was eating
Jennifer,
Do you have any special recipes that would taste good to us diabetics? If so please post them in the recipe file. We are always looking for new ways to fic our food.
Mary Frances I was wondering if you could help me with a question.
i posted this in the preg and diabetic board that i normally go to but alot of us are first timers with GD and after delivery is kind of a unknown. I am hoping you could shed a little light.

Jennifer,
I notice that when I am really sleepy and it isn't an appropriate time to be sleepy, that the real culprit is that my blood sugar is too low. SO when this happens to you again please check and see where you are.
I don't expect you to have problems with either highs or lows after you deliver unless you are breast feeding. If you are breast feeding, and I hope you are able to do this as it is better for both of you, then you are going to have to watch and make sure that your blood sugar stays up. After all you will be feeding two people on the same amount of calories.
I hope this answers your question. How is your weight gain going now? You have really done well up till now. At this point you should be gaining a pound a week. This is really baby weight but there can be some fluid retention at this time also.
Thank you very much I truly appreciate your time in your responses!!
I actually havent gained anything in about 2 months. I had an appointment about a week and a half ago and I was down 1/2 pound. It seems every other week I gain 1/2 then loose 1/2. ( baby is measuring perfect each week and never slowed in growth) I have been pretty unchanged for a good long while. Since I have only gained 19 pounds total with this pregnancy the nurse is pretty sure I will be below that about a week after delivery with breastfeeding alone. I then plan on over the next year to loose enough to get within a healthy range for my height. I am 5'11" so I need to be in the 170 and I am in the 220s. I really hope to have my health well within a good place by then.
I also plan to either breast feed or exclusivly pump. I am determined either way to giver her breastmilk and not formula.
I think you will have more problems keeping your blood sugar up and that you probably need to test some but certainly not as much as now. I amsure the doctor will give you more instructions when the time comes.
Diabetes is a malfunction of the beta cells. There is a belief that some forms of hypoglycemia are actually reactionary diabetes. But normally we don't think of folks having hypoglycemia as having diabetes. But if they eat a diabetic meal plan and often take metformin they don't esperience hypoglycemia. That certainly sounds like the treatment for diabetes doesn't it!
What does the ticker about the 11 days to the last shot mean?
I take super high doses of Progesterone
I do know that progresterone causes increased insulin resistance. But I am not aware that it causes Gestational diabetes. It is also supposed to help with your cholesterol levels.
I do hope that it helps bring your pregnancy as close to term as possible. Medicines in oil take a very long time to be absorbed and they can hurt alot. 16 & 18 Guage needles are miserable! They just used one on me to start an IV for my cardiac test and my poor vein hasn't recovered yet. Its been over 2 weeks and the vein is still dilated.
Please take care and I hope you can post some more cooking suggestions in our recipe folder.
