CRAZY QUESTION....

DH is 45 years old and a sitting duck when it comes to diabetes.  He has 2 brothers with it and several other blood relatives.

Last summer like a slap to the face he went what I would call "crazy".  Or at least totally changed.  He was insanely irritable and angry and easy to set off.  He got depression and it was a horrible year.  His eyesight changed last year and he discovered bi-focal contacts and all seemed well.

But here it is again- and he's irritable only now he is getting blurry vision that comes and goes.  My friend that is diabetic stopped by to do a blood sugar test and he was 104 and then 15 minutes after about 40 carbs from a glass of grape juice was at about 130.  She didn't think this was that conclusive.

She mentioned that her therapist said that depression can be a pre-cursor to diabetes?

Anyone else experience or hear of this?

We're waiting to get him in to the dr but he's a new patient at our family Dr. and has to wait a bit of time still.  I suggested he call our dr and let him know what is up to see if he can get in quickly for the blood test and appointment with his family history.

Thoughts?

Is he dragging his feet about going in to see the doctor?

Hi,

I am the other community leader and I would also like to chime in on this discussion. My name is Mary Frances and I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.

Because of your husband's age and his family history he needs to be routinely tested for diabetes. This mean every several years unless he becomes diabetic and then it is every 3-4 months.

His fasting blood sugar would put him in the pre-diabetes range. The 15 minute test isn't worth anything. All it shows is that he can respond to oral glucose. The diagnosis of diabetes is two fasting blood sugars 126 or above or a random blood sugar above 190.

Mood changes are one of the signs and symptoms of diabetes, along with the usual eating too much, drinking too much and going to the bathroom too much. Has you hubby had any changes in his weight, especially unexplained weight loss?

I hope he has an appointment soon. I would think that needing to weight six weeks would be too long but two weeks would probably be okay.

Please let us know what you find out and I hope all is well with him.

Here is an article that will help you understand diabetic eating. It is good even for folks that aren't diabetic.

I look forward to hearing how his doctor's visit went.
