I have an appointment on Momday to see a CDE.  I really don't know what to expect.  Can anyone give me an idea?

Just a guess, but you'd probably want to bring your glucose reading log, food diary, probably bring your meter along as well (in case you have questions about how to use it and such). You'll probably get information on balancing nutrition and carbs and favorite foods along with setting glucose reading ranges and possibly weight goals (if you need to lose weight).

Lynn,

Deb has covered most things that the CDE will go with you but I think she forgot one. Exercise!! Basically you will get a tune up of your diabetes care. Be sure to bring any of the nagging questions that you have wondered about because the CDE will try to answer them for you.

Let us know how your visit goes.

Lynn,

Even though I am a nurse and pretty knowledgeable about this disease, I love having a CDE assigned to me. I can email her or call her up and I do sometimes see her at the CE courses I attend. When I do something stupid, like somehow lose my meter, she can rescue me pretty quickly!

I am wondering if you won't feel more normal when you are able to rearrange your meal plan. Let me know how you feel.

Why wait to balance the carbs - you can reduce the carbs by reducing portion size and spreading it out over the day - instead of a two slice sandwich, make a one slice sandwich (open faced or folded in half). Instead of a 'bowl' of cereal, check the nutrition info and reduce the portion size. Instead of bread and butter WITH pasta, have just the pasta (and reduce the portion). And so on. Yes, you can get better/different items once you've gone shopping (more veggies, whole grains, low carb items, etc) but you can start now to improve things even with what you've got on hand.

Lynn,

I was on the board of my local food bank and I work in a social services agency that has an emergency food pantry and USDA food distribution. I know how difficult it is. I have had diabetics come into the agency with absolutely no food and I am supposed to find something that they can eat. When I was on the food board myself and a nutritionist worked with them to improve the food that they were providing to their partner agencies. We now get fresh fruits, potatoes, onions and last week beautiful carrots. It is such a help for everyone.

Do the best you can until you can get some new food into the house. We really do understand the problems that you are facing and would do more if we could.
