Hello all -

I'm looking for opinions regarding my blood sugar and health care.

I have been having sugar issues most of my life.  I'm 30 years old and have had low blood sugar since I was young.  About 1.5 years ago I had a physical at work that shoed my fasting blood sugar was 58 BUT I had +2 sugar in my urine.   They said it had to be a lab error and dismissed it.  I just had a baby 4 months ago and throughout my pregnancy I had sugar in my urine but my fasting sugar was good.  My OB speculated that my problem was not pregnancy related and told me to follow up with my family Dr after the baby was born.  I did so and had a 3 hour test.  My results were:

Fasting 90  - High compared to my normal

1 hour 268

2 hour 139

3 hour 60

My dr said I do not have diabetes just a pancreas that is a slow learner and dismissed the issue.  I'm very concerned to just ignore this and do damage to my body.  I have a very high family history of diabetes.

My question is should I see another Dr or are my test results OK

Thank you for any thoughts or recommendations

Hi,

I think you are warranted to have at least a consult with another doctor, preferably someone who specializes in diabetes. You may have something like reactionary hypoglycemia because a 58 blood sugar is hypoglycemia. A random blood sugar above 190 gets you a diagnosis of diabetes and I amnot sure but I would think that your 1 hour test would qualify for random.

How much weight did you gain with your pregnancy and how much did your baby weigh?

I gained about 60 lbs during my pregnancy but was thin to begin with although I still should not have gained so much weight.

Have you been able to lose the baby weight and get back to your normal weight? Your baby was large but not the size of a diabetic baby which are usually over 9 pounds.
