The Oatmeal Chronicles

So, I have another rant, but I'm kind of over the feeling sorry for myself episode, and have, again, come back to battling oatmeal. Here's the deal: I cannot eat oatmeal. It makes my blood levels sky high, for hours, unlike anything else. But I love oatmeal. I mean, I would eat it everyday if I could. And I inherited about 20 instant oatmeal packets of various amazing flavors from my ex-roomate, and they just sit in my fridge (keeps 'em fresh) and mock me. So, here's the question, does anyone know of a, I don't know, low carb oatmeal, or something like oatmeal that actually tastes like oatmeal (I'm sorry, but grits just don't cut it)? I'm desperate, and fortunately for me, but unfortunately for my love of oatmeal, I don't wake up with increasingly low blood sugar levels anymore (that's another story entirely).

I have problems with even flavorless, plain oatmeal. But, I don't know if I've tried sugarless or low sugar before (after 19 years of this I tend to forget everything I've eaten, lol). I keep a few on hand because it's nice when I get really low before bed, to not have to worry about going to IS (insulin-shock) in the middle of the night, and I also go through times when I'll wake up with a BS level of, like, 40, but I suppose I could throw most of it away...

Hello, when I was able to eat oatmeal (can't now as gluten intolerant), I always bought Mc Cann's Irish oatmeal. It is steel cut.....supposedly better for you. Now it is plain, but I would add blueberries, sweetner, cinnamon, strawberries, or some other fruit. It is delicious!!! You can get steel cut oats in some stores and also on line. I don't believe there is any sugar in it. How I cooked it: before I went to bed, I would boil 4 cups of water and then add the appropreate amount of oats, stir, cover and leave over night. The next morning I would take the amount of oatmeal I wanted to eat and put it in the microwave for a minute or so. The rest stayed in the bowl I put it in the night before and back in the frig.

Make sure you have 1 oz of meat (protien) with your oatmeal. It has helped me.

Lynn,

Did you add any milk to your oatmeal? If so a cup of milk will have about 14 grams of carbs. You are right about the ounce of protein balancing out the response to the carbs in the oatmeal.

When I eat oatmeal, I use the instant type that comes out of box where you can measure the amount that you want. I never eat the kind that comes in the packages because it has too many carbs for me.

Instant oatmeal is OUT - it's cut so fine that it digests really fast. Rolled old fashioned or steel cut oats digest more slowly. A regular 'serving' is probably out (I know it is for me) but try a half portion. Or, make oatmeal a side dish (1/4 portion) alongside a small egg white omelette or something.

Hmmm ... no grits? How do you prepare them? Try the instant variety and mix in 1/4 cup of shredded cheddar cheese and a crumbled slice of bacon. Voila! Carbs and protein! And it really is yummy.

I personally have no problem with instant oatmeal as long as it is the sugar-free variety. I guess I'm lucky because I love oatmeal.

Another breakfast favorite is Cocoa Wheat with a packet of sweetener.

With all this talk about oatmeal, I decided to do an 'experiment' with the Sturm's no sugar added Cranberry instant oatmeal.
