I'm Hungry.......

I'm really hungry!  I ate breakfast.  My no sugar, higher fiber cranberry oatmeal.  (my glucose was higher this am too).  I checked my glucose 2 hours after the oatmeal and do not like my results.  It was 36 points higher.  The oatmeal has only 21 grams of carbs and I think 5 or 6 grams of fiber and only 1 of sugar.  I have been drinking sugar free cidar mix but.....

My stomach is about to growl.  I am uncomfortable.  It isn't even 9:30.  How will I make it to lunch?  I have felt this way the last week........  I wish it would go away!  (oh, it doesn't matter what I eat for breakfast)

Have a protein snack like an ounce or two of cheese or nuts or something to keep the growlies away - I know that for me, hungry is a prelude to grabbing anything I can get my hands on so I avoid getting really hungry, I plan for 3 meals and 2 snacks per day so that I'm never more than about 3 hours without food. Today, I was in the middle of something and didn't get to start eating lunch until about 20 minutes later than usual (instead of 12:00 it was 12:20, my last snack was around 9:30-9:45) and when I tested before eating, I was at 87. I'll test again around 2:30 to make sure everything's good and I didn't rebound (I kept lunch simple - toasted multi grain English muffin with all fruit jam, 1 tbl, and all natural PB, 1 tbl, ground it myself so I'm sure it's just peanuts). Then I'll have my afternoon snack - probably a plain graham cracker with some peanut butter, maybe a sprinkle of cinnamon, and maybe a half cup of decaf with a little half & half and some agave (which works for me, YMMV) or some Splenda. My morning snack was some multigrain crackers (3 large crackers is 10 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fiber which seems odd since the first ingredients are "whole" grains) with about 2 oz of cheese. Total 11 grams of carb, 7 grams of protein, little fiber (I get more fiber from meals, e.g. lunch was 8 grams of fiber from the English muffin, than from snacks - they are designed to be low in carbs and easy to eat at my desk)

As far as higher than usual numbers, what's been happening this last week? Any number of things can throw it off: hormones (you've still got some no matter what), illness, stress, change in schedule (for instance, the end of last week was so busy with end-of-summer stuff and all that I didn't get in my usual exercise for 3 days in a row; my numbers crept up even though I was eating the same foods as usual). Also, any "new" foods (for instance, if that sugar free cider mix is not a usual food) might be a problem - sugar free stuff doesn't necessarily mean "sugar free" - if it's actually apple (and not just flavoring), there's fructose in there. "Sugar free" just means they didn't add any sucrose to it during processing. If you stop drinking that, but doing everything else the same, and the numbers drop, you've pinpointed your culprit.

The cidar mix is fine.

Could be that the hrt IS kicking in. I know that estrogen increases during my cycle lead to highs (and carb cravings) and then right when my period starts and everything flips I can get lows if I'm not careful.

So, what are your plans for reining in your carbs? Now that you've named the beastie, you can move on and smite it My best tool for reining in the carbs is a food log that includes calories, carbs, fiber and glucose readings (of course, YMMV). Seeing when and what I'm eating and mentally having to "report" it (even though no one but me sees it) really does help. I can go "sheesh - look at Tuesday! why did I do THAT?" or "Hey, Thursday and Friday look like things are really getting better - hooray for me!" It also helps me track trends like "hmm I seem to be reaching for the graham crackers an awful lot - what other options are at least that easy to manage at work and lower carbs".

Cheryl,

Be careful. It would appear that your estrogens are beginning to kick in and weight gain is pretty common with these medications. 15-30 pounds is not unheard of for weight gain. So watch carefully the amount that you are eating and the amount of exercise that you are getting. Try to switch to lower glycemic carbs (fresh fruits and veggies as opposed to more carb concentrated foods.)

I am not surprised that your blood sugar was a little too high after breakfast or that you were hungry because there isn't enough protein in the milk to hold you. Measure your cereal and add in 1 ounce of protein. This can be nuts, peanut butter, cheese, egg or something similar.

I do hope that you feel better on the estrogens. I know that I did and I certainly don't like the hot flashes which have never

Yup - I add 1/4 cup pecans to my cereal AND plan a protein/fiber snack (like multigrain crackers and cheese) for mid morning as well.

Of course, YMMV

I really don't think it is the estrogen giving me the munchies.

It is getting to be allergy season for the fall allergy sufferers so if that is you (or may be you), that can very likely trigger problems with glucose control because allergies are an overactive immune response and we're already immune-challenged to start with.

Yeah, gotta separate out the meals and the snacks...too much of a good thing is not a good thing. I try to space things about 2.5 to 3 hrs apart. Far enough apart that I can get pre and post meal glucose readings but close enough that I don't get crazy hungry.
