Nancy,

Some people say 250 and others say 300. At that level exercise can make the blood sugar go higher and so is discouraged. I don't think a distinction is made between type 1's and type 2's.

He doesn't realize that he is quite ill right now but he will feel better when his blood sugar stabilizes. Then he will realize how badly he has been feeling and for how long. So he doesn't need to push it right now but portion control and some mild exercising, like taking a walk-not running a marathon!, will make him feel better quickly.

Please continue to tell us how both of you are doing.

I do agree with you that he has to slow down and think of controlling his blood sugar, which is sure dropping down and iam happy with the results too.

When you go to the doctor next week ask them what his A1C results were.

When you 1st are under care for being a diabetic-theres no set amount of insulin to take. Each one us diabetics must use a sliding scale each and everyday. Some meals have more starch then others for example which intern relates to a larger number of insulin units to be taken. He should evaluate the carbs and starches for the predicted meal to be eaten and adjust in insulin amount according to the evaluation. And if not taken enough insulin-his count will most certainly be still be on the higher side. Try taking a little more units(especially when he is in the 500 zone-he has plenty room to experiment with)of insulin and keep him moving along with the new given amount-to keep burning those carbs but check it again to ensure of not too many carbs burned at once-then its time to drink some orange juice.
