At Home Diagnosis??
| Thu, 09-11-2008 - 10:11pm |
I have a family history of diabetes, (father, grandmother, grandfather) and lately I have been having early symptoms like fatique, unexplained weight loss and frequent urination. Before I went to the doctor, I was wondering if there was some way I could mimic the glucose toleance test at home. I was going to eat/drink something sweet (I read somewhere you could substitute a certain number of jellybeans for the glucose solution) and then use a home glucose monitor to test my blood sugar at 1hr, 2hr and 3hr. Will this be in any way accurate? Thanks

Hi and welcome to the board.
Thanks. So I guess what you're saying is I don't need to try and mimic the lab test, all I need to do is test before and after meals and see if I'm within the guidelines of the link you provided. Like I said, my father has diabetes so I was just going to borrow his meter to do this the next time I visit them. Knowing my insurance plan, they probably would charge the whole $30 copay for a simple glucose test and my next physical isn't until May so I figured this would be the easiest and cheapest option.
Thanks again
You'd probably also want to especially test first thing in the morning before breakfast - the fasting glucose reading is a key indicator - if you talked to your doctor, odds are you'd be sent in for a fasting serum glucose test (blood test, no glucose solution to drink). If that shows up as above 126 on two occasions, you've got a confirmed diagnosis.

The finger stick at the dr's a few years ago was $20.
Ok, so I tested my blood sugar and these are the results:
Fasting:
My non medical opinion is your numbers are no where near being diabetic!
Oh no...do not do this.

Yeah based on the little I know, I guess everything is ok for now, but I'll be sure to keep an eye on it.
Thanks for your help everyone.
