Veggie burgers

My husband was diagnosed with diabetes about six weeks ago.....Type 2. Counts are under control with meds and he is losing weight very well. It has been confusing switching from a South Beach Diet to the carbohydrate based diet. South Beach is a very healthy diet and we find many similarities with emphasis on low fats, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. But we have found a great deal of difference in the amount of protein allowed. He is allowed 5 ounces per day.

I've tried to research how to count veggie burgers such as Morning Star. How is this done? One box lists its contents as 1 Lean Meat and 1 Carbo exchange (on the nutrition fact chart it lists 11 grams of protein). Does the Lean Meat exchange count as 1 ounce of the protein allotment?

Thanks,

Judy

Thanks, Cheryl, for your answer. I'm sorry to hear that Mary Frances' husband is ill. I hope that he will be okay. It will be great if she has any more info for me, but that can wait.

From the reading I've done, the best I can tell is that there are different types of diabetic diets. When you say that you count only carbohydrates, do you also try to limit fats and calories? (My husband was given a count of 225 carbo grams per day. But this is to be low fat and 1800 calories.)

Hi,

9 grams of protein equal one protein exchange or 1 ounce of protein. Your hubby is allowed 1 ounce at breakfast and 2 at lunch and dinner. I must say this isn't much protein for a man. I do hope that you saw a dietitian for meal planning help and weren't just given a piece of paper by your doctor.

What makes something a lean protein is the lack of fat in the protein. I frankly wouldn't be concerned about the Morningstaw patties. They should be just fine for you.

The South Beach diet was developed for diabetics. But the purpose of seeing a dietitian for meal planning help is to develop an eating plan that is specific to your's and your husband's life style taking into account his weight and lab work. South Beach can't be tailored to your specific needs this way.

I must run but I didn't want you to think that I would never answer you interesting question.
