I think I am about to the point of needing to do more than diet. I want an idea when I go in what route I would like to go.
Doesn't metforim cause lows? Januvia doesn't though does it? Can you take it be itself? I suppose byetta would be a possibility but I don't know if I could do shots. I know some of you do now...........
My numbers scare me. I can't get them back down. The last few days they have been higher than I like. REALLY higher than I like! This morning, It was 130. Before lunch it was 140. Think before supper it was 159 and about 3 hours later 189. And that is without eating any carbs inbetween! And eating pretty darn healthy! Breakfast... 1 scrambled egg on a ww muffin and a slice of cheese. I did later have an atkins drink with 2 net carbs. For lunch I had a crab cake, no filler, a lettuce salad with blue cheese dressing, left over steamed cauliflower and a sugar free jello. Only thing in between was swiss cheese. For supper, a prepared chicken kiev, I can't remember but it think 11 grams of carbs. I bit over a serving of brussel sprouts (9 grams) and a slice of tomato and about a 1/2 cup of cottage cheese (5 grams of carbs. And sliced peaches for 5 grams too.
I have noticed before that if I don't eat enough carbs my glucose is up. Could I have done that?
I hurt my leg about a month ago and have not been able to be on it.. broke a bloodvessel and not pretty!
Thoughts, ideas?

Remember....you are NOT alone!!!!!

Cheryl,
You really need to know what your A1C reading is currently. Most probably your doc will start you on metformin as that is really a first line drug. Just remember to start slowly with a low dose and remember to ahve something in your tummy before you take it. Metformin does not cause low blood sugar and in some people it cause weight loss. Januvia is expensive and will only lower your A1C 1/2 point. It also doesn't cause lows and encourages weight loss. Byetta you know about. There is a new version coming out soon that you only take once per week. Do know also that certain drugs cause weight gain. Namely Actos, Avandia and all the sulfonylureas cause weight gain and it can be in the 30 pound range.
I think that is enough information for tonight. Please let me know what you doctor recommends. Nurse Mary Frances would recommend metformin but of course I can't prescribe!
In August the dr gave me orders for blood work but no a1c.
Just because it's a whole wheat muffin doesn't mean the carbs are low enough for you, personally. With limited test strips, what I'd do is test before and after breakfast for several days, tweaking the breakfast based on the test results (ww muffin, 1/2 muffin, no muffin, with protein, without protein, etc). Then several days of before/after lunch (with tweaking). Then several days of before/after dinner. Then last thing at night and first thing in the morning - this one will catch the 'dawn syndrome' most likely, if the pre-bed number is good and it's high before breakfast, then your liver is dumping glucose at around 3 or 4 am.
Also, pairing the testings will let you see how much difference you get - you want to keep the change from pre to post meal under 40 pts (I think that's the number). So, if you start at 120 before breakfast (which is not great but not awful) and you end up at 142, that's different than starting at 105 and ending up at 142. KWIM?

As I said, it was an English muffin.
As for the "net" and all like that (24 carbs - 5 fiber) that comes to 19 grams...I know, for instance, that that would be too much for me at breakfast (I need more protein, and carbs have to stay closer to 20 regardless of the fiber).
But, a biggie is the exercise - I can eat the same menu exactly for two weeks running and if I haven't exercised for several days, my numbers will be higher than if I get in my 30 minutes on the treadmill at least 5 or 6 days in a week. Right now I'm fighting that battle because we were away for the weekend (Friday-Sunday) and then DH was admitted to the hospital via the ER and came home yesterday (Tuesday) so I got very little exercise in since I was basically at the hospital with him most all day(I did do 30 minutes yesterday, early, before going to see him). My numbers aren't totally awful but they're higher than they would be if I was exercising and eating the exact same things.

Carbwise that is what I have eaten for years.
Sorry for the tiny font, but i am not staying on long. problems at work since i somehow got that dang virus so spent a lot of the day trying to get another one running, broke the 6/5pin adapter for my split keyboard so using a regular one and its not in a good spot. am afraid to come here on line or anyone else since they dont knwo where it came from!!
Anyway, did the numbers start going up when you started the water pills? Is there any possibility of an infection from the injury! That could explain swelling too. Did they give you ANY meds that might have a steroidal effect? You know that messes up blood sugars.
Its also possible since it sounds like you have been having a painful time that and the stress could be messing up your numbers. If your body is retaining water that could increase your weight which of course can increase the bg numbers.
I hate to mention this place BUT maybe go back to Walmart, go to service desk and ask them to FIND what you were hunting for, or else use one of their electric carts!! Then i forgot to say WHY you should go there. They do sell an A1C kit now that you do the test, but have to mail it in for results but i think you get it back in less than a week. I think it costs $9. Its that one brand a lot of their pharmacy stuff is.
Maybe since you cant exercise much, try to find some type of relaxation tape to use and lower your stress level Or if you can find someplace to swim, that might be a non weight bearing exercise. Maybe also ask about using heat or ice to help your leg recover a little(that i realy dont know what or which would help, but i know with the arthritis heat almost always feels good but if i am in a really lot of pain from overuse, then ice is the way to go.
I didn't see a dr about my leg.
Deb,
Is you hubby okay? I sure hope so. We don't need anymore sick hubbys around here!
Cheryl,
Call Accu-chek and they will send you the testing solution. Tell them that your meter doesn't appear to be acting correctly. Also remember, if you change the battery, you will need to reporgram the meter. Not hard but a nuisence.
