Well, I've been dx as a diabetic for a little over a week and my dr is putting me on insulin.   Metformin has made me sick sick sick, vomiting stomach acid at 2am sick.  So now my doctor has decided to try insulin.  I HATE needles.  I get anxiety over pricking my finger to test!

Hi,

As Cheryl told you, it takes about 2 weeks for your system to get used to metformin. You need to take a really small dose, like 250 mgm once or twice per day until your system calms down. And you must take it with food in your stomach. I know how miserable you can feel. I have been on metformin for years and at first I didn't think I was going to make it. But it magically stopped bothering my stomach in two weeks. And it is possible that you needed to be on insulin even after you started on the metformin. It may be possible that as soon as you get your blood sugar under control that you can come off the insulin. You'll just have to wait and see. But when your blood sugar gets back under control you will feel so much better and realize that all this was worth it. There is hope for a better day.

Hang in there, you will make it.

Dear girl, don't get discouraged; it takes awhile to get everything settled with the Metformin.

Good for your husband, although you don't need a policeman. It just means that he will support the changes that will be made in how both of you eat and good that your doctor has manditory educational program. So many of them don't. I was just at a Joslin Diabetes workshop and they were stressing hoe important diabetic education for the patient. Joslin is part of Harvard University and it has been doing diabetic care and research for a hundred years.

Looking at your morning blood sugar reading I can understand how they would want to start you on insulin. But I am hopeful that you won't have to go that route. You have been a diabetic for quite a while and so it will take a little longer than usual to get your blood sugar under control but it looks like you are getting your health care in the right place.

What caused you to be diagnosed diabetic? Were you ill or what happened?
