Doctor Day

Today was a busy day, but it turned out that we got a lot of Dr. visits out of the way.  Eldersis is doing quite well on that new artificial hip; her Dr. did give her hope that she will be able to drive in a couple of weeks.  I do hope that she won't push it too much.  After we finished at her Dr's. office, we went to DH's Dermatologist's to have that Basal Cell Carcinoma removed from his face.  That took a long time, because of the tissue examination.  The little place on his face was about half as big as a pencil eraser.  The Dr. has showed me what to look for....there is a white place with just a bit of a sheen to it, surrounded by red.  For such a small place, there was about 1 1/2" of skin taken, so look for little places like that on yourselves.  The Dr. also said that it would be best not to let 6 months go by before the problem was taken care of.  After the Derm. Dr., we went on to another clinic so that Eldersis could have ultrasound on her legs to check for blood clots.  She had one below her knee after the surgery, so they put her on Cumadin.  The diet sheet they gave her cut out almost every green vegetable that you can imagine; green vegetables are the bulk of a diabetic's diet.  Her Dr. here wants to get her off of the Cumadin that they Rx'd at Warm Springs.

Yours truly is certainly glad that she didn't suffer from the bellyache as she did the last time.  I know that made me 'bellyache' when I shouldn't have before, but at least I can come in here and vent.   Love y'all!

Yeah, green veggies (leafy greens mostly, including broccoli) are high in vitamin K, which helps the blood clot. I'm surprised though that they used coumadin - unless they discharged her really quickly. Coumadin stays in the blood stream longer (like one pill per day is enough) so it's easier to manage at home. Most surgeries these days, I thought, used heparin instead to avoid post-op clots - shorter half-life. Downside is that it is given by abdominal injection several times per day (and it hurts, leaves bruises). My mom has been on coumadin since 1966, she goes off the coumadin a couple days before things like dental work and does heparin shots so that she can stop the hep, do the dental work, then start the hep for a day then go back to the coumadin. Also, she doesn't have to skip all green veggies BUT she has to eat the same amount of green veggies daily (but not the same ones, she can have broccoli one day, a leafy salad the next and so on), that way they can calculate the dosage based on that. Little sis was on hep shots daily when she was pregnant - her body reacted to the umbilical connection's blood supply as if it was an injury and clotted it off, causing several miscarriages (she was VERY nice to her DH when a shot was due since he'd do some of them for her). And, when DH was just in the hospital for the TIA, they had him on hep shots to make sure there was no further development of anything.
