Hi everyone!! I've got some problems going on, and I'm wondering if maybe you guys give me some insight on whats going on.  I know, obviously that you can't "diagnose" me,  but a little help would be great.

My problem is that I'm wondering if I may be diabetic. I had Gest. diabetes (mom had it with 3 of her 4 children, so I was doomed) and controlled it with a strict diet and did great with my blood sugar readings. I followed my diet to a TEE! While in my 3rd trimester my feet started hurting in the morning...like shocks on the bottoms of my feet. I blamed it on carrying extra weight, and never said anything to my dr. Well even after my baby was born 3 1/2 weeks early....its been pretty much the same. EVERY morning, or even in the middle of the night when I'd wake up to pee, or get up with my baby, I'd be walking on nails for about 15-20 steps. Then it gets better. SOOO 2 weeks ago it got REALLLLY bad. To the point it was ALL day my feet were hurting, and I'd wake up with my arms and legs feeling like I had rubber bands around the tops of them all night. Again, after I'd be up moving around it would subside a bit. Well long story kinda short, my dad mentioned neuropathy, so I looked into that. Didn't know there was such thing as "diabetic" neuropathy...well I started checking my blood sugar VERY randomly...and woke up and one day it was 145. So I checked it periodically a few days later, and it was 132. My norm is about 85-90. So it has been up most of the time averaging about 120ish. Now I know that it isn't real high, but since then I've been watching my carb intakes and kinda going back on my diet when I was pg... guess what... the pain is getting a little better. Last night when I laid in bed my feet didn't throb ridiculously bad!!! So the even bigger problem is that I have no insurance. I know, big bummer. I'm checking into a few things though. Anyways....can anyone give me some advice or insight on what is going on?? Thanks SOO much. Oh and also, my older brother (33yo) has diabetes, and it runs in moms side of the family. Mostly borderline though.

Thanks!
Becky

Hi Ladies! Thanks for your quick responses!! I didn't know that Gest. Diabetes diets were different. I will definitly check out the site you posted for that. As for my weight, I am probably a good 10-15 lbs over weight. I'm sure I will drop a little weight after going on a diet for my blood sugar.

Hi Becky,

I can understand the problem of no insurance but you need to see your doctor. Don't you have a check-up coming up after your delivery? If so, talk to your doctor at that time. In other words I am saying that it isn't an emergency for you to see your doctor, just please do it soon. You need to have your blood sugar tested by the lab to make sure that you aren't already diabetic.

By the way, there isn't any such creature as borderline diabetic. It is like pregnancy, you either are or you aren't. There is a condition called pre-diabetes which if diagnosed appropriately can be stopped before the person becomes diabetic. Only one in four people with pre-diabetes know they have it so it is being under diagnosed a huge amount.
