I've been using this milk ---- Hood's Calorie Countdown - it's in a green carton...... Hopefully, you are familiar w/it. Anyway, it DOES have less cals & less carbs. What brand of milk do you find best?
Carbs are really the # to watch, correct? not necessarily sugars......
Do you shop just in the diabetic section? What about any yummy cereals that'd also be ok for diabetics?
Any other brands, food products, you'd like to rec?

If you like instant oatmeal, Village Farms has a no sugar added instant oatmeal.
I'll look for Village Farms this afternoon-
I heard FIBER is also a great thing for diabs. ie - the Natures Own 2x Fiber bread......
What is a good breakfast for diabs? I am a breakfast eater & I do know fer sure that if you don't eat well in the morning - it will mess you up all day long..........

We are each different.
For me, eggs don't work (nasty gastro results - yuck!) and I prefer to avoid most breakfast meats (and meat in general, save occasional fish). Oatmeal is generally too much for me (more than about 1/4 cup cooked is too much) so I stick with one breakfast pretty much every day - 1/2 cup plain Cheerios with 1/2 cup plain unsweetened almond milk with a handful of pecans crumbled on top and a scant teaspoonful of semi sweet chocolate chips. Comes in at 23 grams of carbs, plus fiber and protein and gives me a little sweet to start the day. At certain times, I'll leave off the chocolate bits because I know that cyclically I have to cut my carbs back a little or my test results run high (hormones are a pain!) Occasionally, if I know I'm going to be doing yardwork or something, I'll have one of DH's homemade all whole wheat no sugar added bagels (he uses agave syrup for the yeast, lower glycemically than sugar and only a small amount per dozen bagels) toasted up with some cream cheese or other protein. On days when I have a blood donation scheduled in the morning, that's when I have a small bowl of oatmeal - I have to up my carbs beforehand or I get really low after donating. Yes, I know that 23 grams is lower than the rule of thumb 30 grams at breakfast but anything above 25 is too much for me in the morning. I balance it with a snack around 9:30 - a small apple, yogurt (plain greek yogurt with cinnamon and agave syrup added - I add the sweetener so I can control how much), All Bran crackers with cheese, etc.
Fiber and protein slow digestion so the carbs get into your system more slowly; a nice slow steady trickle is good, a tsunami not so much.

Hello Deb,
I have no idea how you can do it with only 1/2 cup cereal.
Cheryl,
I eat 30 grams of carbs for breakfast. Most commonly this is 1/2 cup of fiber one cereal, 1/2 cup of skim milk and 1 tablespoon of peanut butter. Believe it or not, I don't get hungry until about 11:30am. I have been eating this for several years and it is really satisfying.
I was reading somewhere over the weekend that King Arthur flours and Fiber One have out a new pancake mix which has 5 grams of fiber in each serving. I haven't seen it yet. But for those who like pancakes this sounds like a winner. I think you have to buy the King Arthur through their website.
It's basically almonds that are crushed then "squeezed" sort of with water. It isn't cow's milk flavored with almond extract. I've seen it on the shelves of several local grocery stores lately - but they usually only have the sweetened versions. It's usually on the shelves where they display the soy milk and Parmalat and such. We buy ours in bulk (a case at a time) from our local vegetarian food store/co-op.

That's what the pecans are for - plenty of fiber to keep me feeling full for a good 2 or 3 hours. Then I have a planned-for snack, a smallish apple, a serving of yogurt, crackers and cheese, etc. Then 2 or 3 hours later (give or take) it's lunch time. 2 or 3 hours later, another planned-for snack. Followed around 3 hours later by dinner.
Do you eat the oatmeal plain (Or is it already flavored)?

Wow! 30 grams of carbs for breakfast would send me up somewhere around 150-160 (if not higher) after breakfast. I'd love to do it but the standard 30-45-45 three meal arrangement just doesn't work for me. I need smaller amounts more frequently (like 22, 15, 25-30, 15-20, 30-40). One factor is the "dawn syndrome" - I wake up with a fasting glucose reading somewhere between 115 and 125 most mornings. So, I try to keep my breakfast a tad lower and it evens itself out by mid morning.
As with everything, test for yourself and figure out what works for your own situation
