I've been using this milk ---- Hood's Calorie Countdown - it's in a green carton...... Hopefully, you are familiar w/it. Anyway, it DOES have less cals & less carbs. What brand of milk do you find best?

Carbs are really the # to watch, correct? not necessarily sugars......

Do you shop just in the diabetic section? What about any yummy cereals that'd also be ok for diabetics?

Any other brands, food products, you'd like to rec?

Some people, though, need to skip the stevia - gives me a really weird feeling kind of like taking a dose of cold medicine where I'm okay but not quite all there KWIM? For a lower glycemic non artificial sweetener, I prefer agave syrup.

Likewise, strawberries may be "low glycemic" fruit on the chart or wherever but for some (like me) it raises blood sugar more than some other fruits. I tend to make sure that any strawberry I have is buffered by something else - fat, protein, fiber; for instance, add some cream cheese with the strawberry or have it with a low carb/low glycemic meal as my "carb choice" so to speak - because I often plan very low carb meals, I have to consciously make sure to add in a bit of carb. For instance, we use Quorn chick'n substitute nuggets - very low carb. Made into fajitas with low carb multi grain tortillas (13 grams carbs, 5 grams fiber) and sauteed fresh veggies, I can have a dinner that's under 20 grams of carbs - a tiny bit too low most of the time. So, that's when I might add a strawberry or two as "dessert".

Ok -
so, proteins - sorta combat carbs - or make them slower to process thru - right?????

For instance, I wondered about Boost w/extra protein --- wouldn't it be pref. to have the extra protein to slow the carbs?

Also ---- when you have a snack - don't you try to sorta match a carb w/a protein? or not?

thanks - I'm learning...... :( :)

Boost and glucerna are made with special starches which aren't readily absorbed which is why they don't quickly raise your blood sugar too high too quickly. And yes, I try to match a carb with a protein otherwise my blodo sugar goes too high to fast and falls just as quickly.

Protein and/or fiber - both slow the digestion, as does fat (but fat is something to watch as well - aim for healthy fats when you add them). If you can't get a protein for whatever reason (ran out of cheese and peanut butter or whatever), aim for =>5 grams of fiber in the snack.

That's why whole apple is better than apple sauce is better than apple juice - more fiber in a whole apple than in juice (most fruit juices are basically like injecting glucose into your veins because the fructose gets digested and absorbed FAST - I basicallt consider fruit juice "medicine" rather than "food" - it's medication for sudden serious low blood sugar)
