My mom is border line diabetic and so far has been able to control it with her diet a friend of hers is diabetic told her that if she ate something and her sugar level got to high she could take a little lemon juice to lower her level. We are wondering if this is really ok to do. does anyone know and has anyone ever heard of this. She tried it one day when they had to eat out and it did bring her sugar level down to a normal level. but we are worried about if its really ok to do on occoasion. since she is still learning what things raise her levels. thanks for th help

Citrus fruits in general tend to raise blood sugars. But, I think dill pickles can lower it so maybe it's the level of acidity vs. the level of carb (if any). I don't know that'd I'd rely on lemon juice too much myself but if it works as an occasional (stress occasional) fix for too high readings, go for it. So long as it doesn't become a fall-back "Oh it's okay if I eat 6 oreos, I'll just have a spoonful of lemon juice afterward".

Julie,

I have never heard of the "lemon juice" treatment. I have heard about vinegar though. You mom needs to concentrate of eating fresh fruits and veggies in controlled amounts and trying to stay on the more complex carbohydrates.

By the way, there is no such thing as borderline diabetes. It is like pregnancy, you either are or you aren't! If her fasting blood sugar is below 125 but above 100 she is correctly diagnosed as pre-diabetic. In this case, of she will develope and exercise regieme and eat healthily and lose a little weight she can prevent or at least prolong the diagnosis of diabetes.

Please let us know if you have more questions. Congratulations on your pregnancy! You have a lovely siggy.

She eats alot of fresh fruits and veggies but she is inding that alot of them still cause her levels to spike way up.and she is always hungry. Ill ask her what her test results were I cant remember the exact values she has lost some weight but she cant seem to louse any more. they excercise every other day her and my dad both they it together. Im trying to find things breakfast seems to be the main struggle at the moment for things she can eat. i gave her some new recipies yesterday so im hoping a few of those will work out for her. she seems to do ok finding things to eat for lunch and dinner at least at the moment.

The thing she needs to remember about eating fruits and vegetables is you can still get a large number of carbs with some of them.

She has tried the intant oatmeal the sugar free kind and it still sent her levels super high . I know she tried one kind of whole wheat engls mufin a month or so agaio and it sent her level really hight too she has been eating an egg or egg subistute for breakfast but she is worried about eating too many eggs a week. I gav her a diabetic recipy for some cranberry orange mufins that are supost to be good she is going to try it out this weekend and see how that does. she is getting tred of just eating an egg for breakfast or cottagechees and apples (right now seem to be ne of the only fruits that arnt causing her levels to go wackie. Im trying to understand some of this for her so i can eplain it more simple to her but some if the rules are even confusing to me. i know you have to have carbs to function and survie. We are struggleing to find a ballance for her so she is not hungry all the time but is keeping her levels undercontrol.

Often the instant oatmeal does not have anywhere near as much fiber as the longer cooking kinds.

i gound a guideline for how much a ercing size of fruit is and i sent that to her. she cantdo bannananas at all she tried just a couple slices and that was a big no no. so she should be eating things higher in fiber. e do alot of lable compairing and i gave her a couple types of oatmeal to try that were supost to be better.she tries to avoied processed foods and does alot of things from scratch she can do rie bread ok so thats rally the only kinda bread she really eats she did find one kind of wheat bread that she dident do too bad on if she was really careful what she had with it. she really needs to be able to see a nutritionists but her inshurance wont cover her to see one but they may cover one after they have had the inshurance for a year because then it wont be considered preexhisting so mabie he could check into it then.
