I remembered something! Years ago we had a Chihuahua patient that had blood in the feces. We kept checking for intestinal parasites etc., no go. This little dog was never out of the house (hardly out of the owner's arms). We managed to keep it a night or two and the symptoms disappeared. She took it home, and then it was bleeding again. We were at our wits end. The owners were an anesthesiologist and his wife, therefore, we knew that anything that they said that they saw or did was actually the truth. After we kept the little dog another night, and fed it the food that we used, the symptoms were gone again. The woman took the little dog home, and called us a little while later. She had an idea; she took a can of the dog food (Alpo) and washed it through a colander. She found at least 1/3 cup of ground up bones that were as sharp as razors. She brought them to us to see. We wrote a letter to Allen Products, and their answer nearly floored us. They realized that there was a problem for some very small animals, and they were changing the grinder size from 5/8 to 3/8!!~ You might tell your veterinarian about this. Although Allen Products changed their grinders, other manufacturers may not have. All of the meat 'by products' are 4 D meats (diseased, downer-cow, dying or dead). By-the-way NEVER EVER FEED BIL-JAC!!!

Twosweet02,
Almost wants to make sure that your fir friend is a vegetarian!
Actually Abby only eats dry food. The vet told me to measure her food and that he wanted her fed twice per day. She gets 1/3 cup of Royal Canin 35 for breakfast and if she doesn't finish it, she doesn't get anymore. If she has been especially active and finishes her food she gets an additional 1/3 cup late in the day. Most of the time she eats less than 1/2 cup of food per day.
She does eat a little bit of fiber one cereal when I have my breakfast and lately she has been getting 6 greenies at bedtime for 12 calories! I really don't like to give animals treats but I relented a little bit when she really needed to gain weight. She isn't fed table food.
I am aware that there is a big problem with cats getting diabetes. The vet was concerned about the Royal Canin 27 that she was eating because it had too many carbs in it. He thinks that about 10 pounds is a proper weight for her based upon her size. I do try to make sure that she gets exercise everyday because she is an indoor cat and so there is less chance for her to use up her calories. The vet told me that if I didn't measure her food and watch her weight that she would be put on a diet at her 1 year check up! So being the good nurse that I am, I have followed the doctor's orders as best I can!!
Cheryl,
How much does she weigh? I am trying to remember her name and I can't! Please refresh my memory.
Her name is Taffy.
Nancy,
I tell Abby that she isn't going to starve to death because I couldn't stand it!! She has a funny little voice but I am quite sure that it would be very insistent if the human servants don't follow her wishes.
It always amazes me how doxies and I am sure other kitties and puppies are so talented at telling owners and others how no one feeds them!
I am sure that was part of the reason my Twinkie made out like a Bandit every time we visited Foster & Smith in Rhinelander!
Nancy,
This reminds me of Inky, a cocker spaniel that my sister and I had as children. Inky had to spend the night at the vets and in the morning the vet told us what a nice dog he was. He had managed to do the vet out of a whole box of treats! Seems everytime the vet came around he begged for another one. Really all he wanted was to go home to his family.
Today, I needed to get Taffy cat food.
Hi Cheryl...
When I took Lily in for her shots this year my vet said 1/3 c or less 2x a day. She is only a little over weight (about 3/4 lb)
