My glucose is 210!!! I have NEVER seen it over 200. It has been 'higher' again the last few mornings. Today it was it said 185!!! All I had overnight was a dill pickle spear and Ocean spray that you put in water. So, I cleaned my finger with alcohol and took it again. It was 193.
So, for breakfast I had 2 eggs scrambled with a bit of cheese, butter, and dried onions. I also had a dill pickle spear. I took it 3 hours later and it was 154. So, for lunch a had a healthy choice with 32 grams of carbs, 5 g fiber, and 2g sugar and 21 g protein. And a packet of sugar free cookies with 15g carbs, 3g fiber, 0 g sugar, 3 g sugar alcohol. and now a bit more than 2 hours later it is 210!!!! Why????? I have been taking my metformin... I had NO snacks today at all... NONE!!!
Ok, so I didn't sleep last night. I finally just got out of bed at 3 and did a load of laundry and cleaned the microwave etc. I do know that when I don't sleep well my morning number will be higher. And somehow after my shower yesterday morning as I went to bend over to dry my legs my back was in severe pain. It has hurt since. I know that could raise it too..... I have supper in the slow cooker... 11 g of carbs per serving.
Do I need to take another metformin? Do you think I need to take 2 not 1 per day?

Yikes! Sounds like it might be time to readjust your carbs - 45 grams of carbs at any one meal, even if it's got a hefty dose of fiber along for the ride as you did, is still just flat out too many carbs at once for me (for example).
Stress, pain/illness, hormones, all that "stuff" that you already know could be mucking with it for sure.
A low carb dinner and re-test and if you can manage it, get a little exercise in this afternoon. And be prepared to feel weird this evening as it comes back down.
Don't change your medication without first consulting with your health care person.
Oh, and FWIW, I know that if my glucose is going high, I *will* wake up at about 3:15 am. It usually takes me about half an hour of tossing to get back to sleep, sometimes longer. I sometimes get out of bed and do some gentle stretching and that seems to help me get back to sleep (and sometimes I can wake DH up and do a bit of 'exercise' to get back to sleep )
Let us know how it goes this evening.

Deb, thanks to perimenopause and now menopause I don't sleep.
Cheryl,
My answer is 47 grams of carbs. Way too many carbs for breakfast. If it is possible try to get some exercise. Remember just walking helps. Stress and pain do raise your blood sugar also.
When I wake up in the middle of the night it is usally because of low blood sugar. I can normally wake up and then go back to sleep even though I am a light sleeper. But when I can't, I usually test and discover that my blood sugar is in 50-60 range. So once again your meter is your friend in helpong you understand what is going on.
Dinner sounds wonderful!
I didn't have 47 grams of carbs for breakfast.
Cheryl,
Sorry, I miss read breakfast. At this point I would wonder if you are developing an infection somewhere in your body. You can see an elevation of the blood sugar before you know where the infection is. So just watch what is happening.
How much metformin are you on? The normal dose is at least 1000 mg per day and the maximum is 2500. So if you are taking only one 500 mg tab you are a long ways away from the maximum dosage.
Hi Cheryl...
You mentioned something about not sleeping well, that will also make your bg higher.
My glucose is 138 this morning.
Lack of sleep is considered a stress and can drive glucose readings up - along with blood pressure and other things.
Maybe look for ways to get in extra steps/movement without going out of the house - hubby has on occasion just walked up and down the stairs for 20 minutes to get movement into the day or used the bottom step as a stair stepper and stepped up and down and up and down and up and down... :-) DS thinks it looks pretty silly but it is effective. New England winters (and summer humidity) was a big part of why we chose to invest in a good quality treadmill and recumbent exercise bike - no excuses and over time, costs way less than extra medications and such.
We use Quorn - a mycoprotein chicken substitute (no soy, no meat). Last night we had Quorn 'tenders' (little nuggets) in a tasty fajita saute - frozen bell peppers and seasonings plus the tenders, topped with a sprinkle of cheddar and a dollop of sour cream, some home made fresh guacamole and a homemade whole wheat flour tortilla (I did a test last week with a fresh tortilla - ate my usual breakfast, waited 2 1/2 hours, ate a tortilla, warmed, with butter and a tsp of jam, tested 2 hrs later and my glucose was mid-90s! Then had a tortilla warmed with a bowl of veggie chili and tested 2 hrs later and was in the mid 120s! If we don't have fresh homemade (from home ground wheat), I use the low carb multigrain tortillas which I know are very low and work well)

Not sleeping for 16 years is serious! Aside from hormones, I'd think that after 16 years the hormones would settle into an equilibrium, have you explored other issues that might interfere with sleep such as apnea?
