HIDA scan and other results - new post

I decided to start a new string instead of adding to my other maniacal posting! I apreciate the patience!

Hi everyone, me again!

I got a copy of my lab results, all the blood work was ok, the U/S showed no gallstones, 12.8cm and 12.4 cm kidneys (whatever that may mean), and the HIDA scan showed no gall bladder emptying, no acute cholecystitis, and an ejection fraction of 1%.

Should I worry?

Dawn

Dear Dawn, I guess I would wonder about the no gallbladder emptying. I think your gall bladder is supposed to empty. But I wouldn't worry. At least you haven't any stones. I guess if your gall bladder isn't emptying properly, I would ask my Dr. what could be the reason it doesn't. I don't understand most of the words and numbers in your report, either. I hope you have another appointment in which to have your doctor help you understand what is going on. Cheers, Ruth

Hi Dawn - I'll respond to both of your posts here - hope this makes sense.

Dawn wrote: My mom is ecstatic that the surgeon did not want to take it out (she is not a fan of surgeons). She wants me to take more Vitamin C to help .

I'm a big fan of Vitamin C also - what you don't need you pee out. When I was admitted to hospital 08/03 with an acute GB attack they wanted to do surgery right then and there. I was in shock about the diagnosis and also felt like I was being pressured. . . so I did not agree to surgery. I wanted it all explained to me when I wasn't in a Morphine fog (don't think that's too much to ask)

I made huge changes in my

Hi Jo (Wren and Ruth!). I thought I would never get to the internet~

Thank you for posting so much informative info. YOu al sure do come through for everyone!

My PCP called me late Tuesday night and was surprised by the surgeons response. He wants me to get a second opinion with a GI guy. He indicated that the gall bladder is not working (basically by seeing that 1% was ejected out when it was supposed to be the 35-75% ejection rate). I did not feel so bad about it all when he agreed at the lack luster help I got (the surgeon didnt even ask my history, poke around or anything else).

Since all this has started, I feel that dull pain under my right rib cage and get minor chest pain that lasts for hours. Not near as bad as it was (thank goodness). Maybe this will just "go away".

I have noticed that when the right side hurts, the left side under the rib cage starts to ache too. I am going crazy!

Thank you again ladies.

Dawn

PS Jo, I am still exhausted and sick. If I did not know better I would think I was pregnant! (I have a tubal and have had "regular" cycles!) I wish the tiredness would just go away. I love all the things I have to do each day!

thanks!

Dawn - so glad that you are seeing someone else. I hope you are feeling better soon.

Before my big GB attack (Aug 16/03) I was feeling washed out and just dreadful. For the month leading up to it I thought I had a flu - I felt tired and woke up feeling hung over. During the 2 wks before the attack the nausea and icky feeling I'd wake up with lasted all day long. I've never been pregnant - but I did have more than one person tell me that's what it feels like during the first bit of pregnancy.

Take care,

Jo

Better get the gallbladder out!. Mine is only at 15%, and my gastro (who speaks nationally about liver/pancreas findings etc. said that if you do not remove a bad, diseased or non-functioning gallbladder, it can lead to other problems, like scarring of the bile ducts.

OH, I am so happy that I have found some people who have the same thing I do. My gallbladder is at 20%, I just found out a few weeks ago after being sick for many years. I am scheduled to have surgery on the 14th. I have not been able to find anyone who has this same condition. I AM SO HAPPY. Would you guys who have this problem be willing to email me directly and tell me what all of your symptoms are and such. I'm trying to figure out if this is what is really causing my symptoms. The worse one for me is chronic nausea. Oh, if you could email me that would be so great. My email address is hmdoyle00@aol.com Just let me know that you are from ivillage. If you don't want to email me directly, that's fine, but maybe you could put some more posts on here describing what your symptoms are and stuff. Thanks so much, you don't realize how much I appreciate it. My surgery is coming up soon and I really need to make a decision. Thank you.

Dear Dawn, This is Ruth, again. I, too, had a non-functioning gallbladder filled withthick bile. I had it removed last Feb. 3. Problem is, I have exactly the same symptoms now that I had before the surgery./ The surgeon said he was 98 percent sure that gallbladder was to blame for the upper burning under right ribcage. Mine spreads across to the far right abdomen as well. Sometimes the pain in a specific spot under the right ribcage and right next to the esophagus is sharp. Sometimes there is just burning. Now everyone is different , so I don't know if you would have the same experience I have had. I still have the VAGUE NAUSea upon awakening , sour taste in mouth, burning that I had before the surgery. I don't think I digest fats any better either. I wish I had asked Why I have such thick bile, and why wasn't my gallbladder emptying. What else could this burning be? Trouble is I still am not finding anyone who has a clue. I am currently trying a celiac diet although I have not been diagnosed as having celiac disease. I have had digestive problems , especially constipation , since childhood. Have taken all the medicines recommended for Gerd. as well as alot of other medications. All to no lasting effect. The diet I am on is the SCD diet which is the most limiting one for celiac. My aim is to get down to what is basic and work from there. I know I am lactose intolerant, also have trouble with corn, tomatoe-potato family. I am currently eating meat, (get rid of as much fat as possible. ) Some things like bacon and pork are allowed, but I don't use them. That leaves me with beef, poultry, fish, vegetables (fresh or frozen), eggs, (may try eliminating eggs, but doubt if they are at fault since I don't eat many anyway) mushrooms, and fruits. Many acidic fruits bother me, too, so I eat alot of bananas. Cantalope goes pretty well, too, if I don't overdo. I am five weeks into this diet, starting the 6th. One doesn't expect to get completely over something that has been operatinng for around 70 years. I am 76. I have been diagnosed with constipation oriented ibs. If you are interested in celiac, there are several other variations of the diet out there. You can get more information on ivillage's celiac board or at www.celiac.com. ibs boards also have interesting insights. ivillage also has an ibs and a gallbladder-gerd board. I am also taking some probiotics. Right now one containing protease, a digestive aid and acidophilus. If you are doing a celiac diet you have to be careful that medicines, etc. do not contain wheat , rye, or barley, and on my diet, oatmeal. Oatmeal is iffy because often oatmeal and wheat are packaged out of the same bins without thorough cleaning between uses. I am suspecting that my bile is still thick and that it isn't going through the tubes into the small intestines any better than the gallbladder was emptying. That is just my wonderment. Possibly the bile was thick because it sat so long in the gallbladder. Somehow that all doesn't make sense. I have had problems for years, what finally makes the gall bladder empty? Maybe the question that needs to be asked is why the gallbladder got so sluggish in the first place and is there anything one can do to slowly improve its function. I am guessing that most gallbladders only get worse because their owners continue to eat what they want . My experience so far with my diet is that after the first three weeks I saw a little improvement. The sharp pain ;under ribs was gone and the burning not as strong. However, foolishly, I made some goodies for company during the 4th week that set me right back on my heels. Now I have to start over from the bottom. I forgot to say that gluten is the stuff in wheat, etc. that is harmful. I am behaving myself again, but will have to be patient. In the meantime I am experience an increase in problems with constipation which complicates things. A number of people on this diet have complained of constipation. I forgot to say that I also have something called nerd, which is like gerd oR gastrointestinal reflux disease except that the burning is not the result of acids coming up an damaging my esophagus. When I had the exam of my upper digestive tract there was no evidence of damage, just a little irritation. Wow, I have really rambled. Have to get home and eat! My solution to problemof calories is to eat more of what I do eat. Cheers! Ruth
