Please Help... Severely Constipated

Hello board,

I was wondering if anyone can help me. For the last 6 months I have been having problems with constipation. I went to the Dr. and she instructed me to take stool softeners. Once I began taking them I was on the right track and I took them only when I was backed-up so to speak. To make a long story short. It been over 2 weeks since my last productive BM. I have tried taking the softeners, eating plenty of ruffage, I've even eaten lots of pineapples. But nothing has happened. I don't have the urge to have a bm nor do I even feel my food digesting. My appitite has been down lately. The only thing that I can recall changing in the last few weeks is that I began taking a new birth control. Does anyone know if birth control can cause constipation. I'm at my whits end. Today I drank CASTOR Oil for the first time since the 80s. Someone please help. I am willing to try anything. I am trired of all of this discomfort. Thank You in Advance----Jaynie

Hi Lynn,

The castor oil did work oh so well. I feel so relieved. I am taking Kariva BC( the generic version of Mircette). I think that the bc may have done it. I just began taking this bc 19 days ago. This is the first time that I have been on any bc since last September. I started taking the BC because my period had just stopped out of the clear blue from May thru August. Do you think that the constipation could be associated?

I am so happy that the laxative worked that I don't know what to do. The only thing else that I had left to try was Citroma ( you know, the laxative that comes in the green glass bottle), or an enema ( which I am so against). If I have any problems in the coming days I will be sure to mention it to my Dr. I already had an appointment scheduled for the 11th so I hope that I won't have any more problems before then... no scratch that, ever.

Thank you,

Jaynie

PS. Please let me know if you think that my cycle had something to do with the constipation.

Thanks for the suggestion although, I must confess that apples are one of my least favorite fruits. Then again I never want to go through this again. This is like my third time this year having severe constipation. I will try to eat an apple on the regular basis. Once again--- thanks!

Muchas Gracias!

This list is more up to my speed. I like flavored oatmeal and will tolerate dried prunes better than I will apples. I do like plain cold, un-iced water and include it as a regular staple in my life. Thanks for telling me about the bananas. I love bananas and have ate 2 this week while trying to cure my constipation.

Thanks! :-)

Hi, I wanted to add some suggestions also for your diet. I'm IBS-C and don't like to eat apples, but I love applesauce, and I add ground flax seeds to the applesauce and oatmeal. The flax seeds and flax seed oil are a big help and it also helps to releave my cramping and pains.

I've read several posts that the flax seeds are best if ground up, I won't think to eat them whole. I do have a question in regards to the ground flax seeds, how much should you use each day? I've not been able to get an answer on this, I've started with 3 teaspoons in the past couple of days. I did find an article that said you should take approx 30 grams of ground flax seeds each day, which we did some calculating, 30 grams is equal to 1 ounce, 1 ounce is equal to 6 teaspoons, so 6 teaspoons a day??
