Hiatal Hernia and Pregnancy

I am 27 years old and I have known that I have a hiatal hernia for about five years now. It is very symptomatic if I do not take medication on a daily basis. Right now I am on Protonix to control the symptoms. As with every medication I have tried, it is beginning to be less effective each day, and I am starting to suffer with heartburn every day again. This has led me to consider having the corrective surgery, because I have tried pretty much every medicine on the market.

I hope to have children within a few years also--another reason that I have been considering the surgery. I know that once I start seriously trying for a child, I will have to stop the meds. Has anyone had the surgery and then gotten pregnant later? Has it led to any complications? Are there any concerns about the surgery reversing itself during your pregnancy? Is there a time period that you must wait after the surgery before you get pregnant? I have tried to do some research about this online, but I mainly find links saying that you can get a hiatal hernia during your pregancy. I have found nothing about how to treat a symptomatic hernia during your pregnancy. I have tried multiple times to stop my meds, but within a few days I am choking again when I try to eat and within a week I begin vomiting after every meal. So, I don't see how I can make it through a pregnancy, and the sickness that can go along with it, without meds or without first undergoing the surgery.

If anybody has any information on this, I would really appreciate hearing what you have to say. Thanks in advance for your help!
