Scared to death
| Wed, 09-22-2004 - 8:13am |
Hello,
I have been experiencing some awful problems lately. When i have a bowel movement all that comes out is this tissue like substance (it is sometimes white/sometimes yellow). Then when I wipe (tmi) there is lots of clear discharge. Often times it is blood and at other times it is yellow. My doctor has scheduled me for a colonoscopy. She believes that there is a chance that i have Ulceritis colonitis. What is this? Isn't it a very serious problem. I am only 18 and i am scared to death. I have posted here previously with my problems but i never thought that I may have this.
Thanks,
Kimberly

Sorry you are having a rough time of it. Take a deep breath and try not to worry. First thing, are you seeing a gastroenterologist? That is the specialist who can help you; I highly recommend one rather than a family care or primary care MD. A specialist will be very experienced with performing the colonoscopy as well as diagnosing you.
Diet is often the culprit with digestive disorders; there are medications for people with colitis as well as dietary changes. Feel better and try not to get too stressed. Let us know how you are doing.
PS the colonoscopy is easy and painless!
Hi Kimberly!
Sorry to hear that you are still having problems.
Thanks for your replies. I have a colonoscopy scheduled for october fourth with a GI doctor. My labs came back normal. So now my doc says that I most likley don't have ulceritive colitis. She said I may have IBS. But this leaves me confused because every where that I have read said that IBS does not cause bleeding (which I have had a lot of). The doc also said it could be endometriosis on my bowels (I have had it on my ovaries). My doctor had me do a fecal blood test and i turned it in today. I don't know the results yet, but oviously there is blood. TMI, my bm has now changed colors. It is both a black and clay color. This happened yesterday after a bm w/ tons of mucous. Ugh!!! Today I feel pretty good, is it normal for ulceritive colitis to take breaks and then come back?
Thanks for the help (I am sure i will need more)

I am glad you
Kimberly,
Yes, it is possible for Ulcerative Colitis to come and go.
Well Saturday was hell on earth. I ate a cinamon roll in the morning and a little while later I had the worst bowel movement yet.I had almost the same reaction Friday after eating a cinamon roll so I have totally cut them out of my diet. I was in so much pain that I nearly threw up. My stools were very narrow, almost pencil like. I had about three episodes like this. I finally had to stay in bed all day because every time that I stood up I felt like I was going to have a bm. I have started keeping a food journal to show my doc. I also got very sick after eating canned chicken noodle soup (I will never eat that again). My stool samples came back Friday and the doc said they were negative for blood. I know that there is blood in them I have seen it in the stool and when I wipe(tmi). One more thing that is really bothering me is that my DH and I had sex yesterday (I have stopped using the pill because of the awful side effects) and I was ovulating. We both completely forgot to use a condom. So now I am stressing that I may get pregnant. Which is not good because I am getting ready to have a colonoscopy. Do you know if the drugs would harm the fetus if I am pregnant?
Thanks so much,
Kimberly

Perhaps you should call your GI and let him know you are really struggling with the pain; let him know what you are eating. Chicken noodle soup is really something that digests easily so it is strange you are having trouble with that.
Don't forget to let him know you might be pregnant. Maybe he can move up the colonoscopy, although it's right around the corner now. He might ask you to lay off the fiber until you get the test.
Just be careful with chicken noodle soup,
Kimberly
