Hey everyone,

Well, I had the colonoscopy on Monday. My prep was wonderful, because i had had a liquid diet for two days previous to the prep. Anyways~ The doctor told my husband that they found inflamation on my transverse colon, sigmoid colon, and the rectum. They took a biopsy of these. They also found some abrasions. They said it looks like non-specific colitis (I have no idea what that means). The doctor ordered me to do more stool samples for a period of three days. The nurse and the doctor were awful. The doctor only stayed in the room for one minute (if that) and did not answer any questions. The nurse flat out refused to answer any of my questions because she said that I would not remember the answers. Howver, I clearly remember everything mean that she said. They did not even tell me what colitis is. They also did not tell me what kind of diet to follow. Is this normal for them not to do before they get the results of a biopsy back? I am pretty mad at the way that the nurse and the doc. treated me. I mean what am I supposed to do until then. Every time I go somewhere I have to use the restroom. I had 4 bm in my pants overa two day period. What am I supposed to do?

Hey-

I had a similar experience 2 years ago with my first gastro- told me I had ulcerative colitis and see ya in 2 years. This is what I have learned since then (try going to ccfa.org):

Drugs can effectively put it in remission. No cure unfortunately. My best friend was immodium! When in remission you won't even realize there's a problem.

A low residue diet can help, but not necessarily. I found staying away from high fat foods (ie. fried) helped, as well as staying away from abrasive foods. You can find ways around this- raw garlic is out of the question for me, but roasted garlic is fine. I also found that not eating the same meal 2 days in a row helped too. No leftovers for me. It's never a bad idea to consult a nutritionist.

Easy to say but hard to do: try to keep your stress level low.

Colitis is not the end of the world and can be managed- it will just take some time to figure out what works for you and what doesn't. A second opinion isn't a bad idea either-take the colonoscopy results to another doctor. If I had done that I would have known that for the past 2 years I've actually been suffering from Crohn's not Ulcerative Colitis. You may find the next doctor more sympathetic to your needs and more helpful in ways for you to get into remission.

Let me know if I can help.

I have also had a bad Colonoscopy expirence with the gasternetologist (however you spell it) They couldnt find what was wrong with me, and when I was being wheeled into the room, the nurse came in and told the doctor that so and so patient still had questions regarding her exam. He told the nurse " I already told her, she is just having a dumbass moment", I could beleive this doctor was about to give me a colonoscopy!!! All they found was internal hemmoroids, but I woke up 2wice during the exam screaming and having one of my stomach attacks!!! When I followed up with the doctor because I was still having my pain attacks (which is just being diagnosed as IBS) I could hear him outside the door telling the nurses " I dont know what to tell her, I dont know whats wrong with this woman"! I switched doctors and didnt want to do further tests because he had to go along with the other doctors prognosis. I insisted so reluctantly he did a lower g-i catscan and a barium enema x-ray. Still nothing... Well So I guess they ruled out the colon. Maybe it is another part of my digestive system. I am on anxiety medicine (Lexapro) which helps tremendously from my attacks to start. I would do investigation on the computer and books on Colitis which is serious stuff. Atleast you have found the answer to your stomach problems, which I beleive is curable. But he needs to give you further advice!!! I would definently switch doctors, and ask for your file, if you ask for your medical records, he would have to give them to you. Just ask the mean Nurse behind the administrative counter she will give them to you!!

Wow, these MDs sound just awful. I also had a very bad experience with the first GI I went to and I hightailed it out the door fast! My new one is fabulous, patient, and respectful.

Hope you keep interviewing GIs until you find one that will listen and treat you with the respect you deserve. You are entitled to your medical records like the other poster said; call your medical examiners (for your state) if you have trouble getting them. There might be a time limit in which they need to deliver the records and it is helpful to know your legal rights. (I actually had one doctor tell me "I'll decide what records you get".) I think NOT!!!
