Adhesions

Hi. My name is Jacque. I am 23 years old and about 8 years ago, my appendix ruptured and I had to have emergency surgery. Last month, I had a bowel obstruction (where adhesions wrapped around my intestines). After a month, I was back in the hospital with another obstruction; however, a ng tube cleared the problem without having to go through surgery again. I was just curious if anyone has been through this. If so, has it occured over and over or just a one time thing? Please let me know all you can!

I feel fine and am doing great since my last hospital stay. I just want to make sure I can do everything I know to prevent it and absorb a lot of information about my situation. Also, I want to hear stories of people that this has happened to and has only happened once! haha. Thank you for your support and concerns! My husband is overseas and luckily he was able to fly home on emergency leave when they did surgery...but only in serious situations (and sometimes not even that) can he come home. :( So thanks for just listening!

Love,

Jacque

I dealt with this exact problem a few yrs back. Had a Crohn's resection and had terrible pain for months after. Finally the drs told me it was adhesions and they went back in about 5 months after surgery and were able to 'snip' the scar tissue. Unfortunately for me, it recurred again a year later and I had another mini surgery. I am sure it is different for everyone, but if this problem does recur for you and you need the surgery, the surgery for adhesions is very minor and the recovery was just a few days. Compared to everything else, it is nothing to be frightened of. Make sure you communicate to the doctors everything that is going on - my scar tissue was 'strangling' my intestines and every test and xray looked like nothing was wrong with me. Good luck and feel better.

Jacque,

I have had several intestinal blockage surgeries over the years because of kidney surgeries that later caused adhesions. The NG tube helped the last 2 times I was blocked. 3 years ago my Dr. gave me Xenical to keep my bowels moving well. It has helped tremendously, but now I have started experienceing a bad case of GERD. My mistake was to rely on a synthetic drug to accomodate a quick fix for such a long period of time. Now I am eating not only very low carb and sugar, but I have to almost eliminate fat as well. No wonder vegetarians appear to be healthier. I will incorporate very lean meat in my GERD diet along with veggies and fruit. I eat ALOT of yogurt, freshly ground flax seed and have added acidopholus now to increase the Phlora in my system. I have had a very unhealthy intestional tract over the years of my 19 kidney surgeries and blockages. It is time I got down to a more alternative and natural business! If your Dr.recommends takeing the Xenical for a while until your tract operates on a more natural level, I hope it helps you like it did me. I think it has helped me stay block free for several years now. Until my system starts to operate on its own, I will start taking Milk of Magnesia-but I would supplement calcium, because I feel it takes away from the skeletal structure when used for long periods of time. Drinking alot of water, is probably the best stimulant of all. My understanding is that Milk of Magnesia pulls water into the colon, therefore, allowing a better evac. Talk to your Doctor about alternatives and y'all decide which will be better for you. Good Luck Maime
