HiI am new to the board,
I was diagonosed with DD after a BE and previous hospitaliztion with an inflamed
mass and put on bed rest and IV antibiotics.(A few months ago) I have suffered from
stomach problems for a long time and but told the docs I get gas pains, that's what I thought it was, just really painful though.
I still experince painful attacks. Can anyone tell me about their experience with
diverticulitis and the osis part too.
I am 41.

Hi and Welcome to iVillage Crystal_clear,
HI Crystal_clear!
Welcome to the board.
What I meant was Diveritculitis is the actual infection I had and the Osis part
meant Diverticulosis (living with having this problem). I have realised over time that my problem has not been too little fibre in my life but too little fluids since I was
18. It's a long story but I really don't like water and haven't since the age of 18
and I think that's how I have blown out my colon like a worn out tire tube.
I get painful attacks fairly frequently and I am frightened of a complete and massive blow out. Why do these attacks happen?
Because of my age the docs didn't expect to find this , they thought I might have appendecitis but an Ultrasound and Ct revealed an inflamed mass, funny thing is that my pain was no
where near where the mass was and I didn't have a high WBC or fever just pain for about 4 days that I kept telling people was probaly the flu.
I am very aware of my "stomach" now as I do not wish to igonore it and suffer the consequences of a complete Tire tube (colon) blow out.

I have to agree
I just recently got out of the hosp after having a sigmoid colon resection because of diverticulitis. Ive suffered with this disease for many years but in recent years had many attacks sending me off to the DR or ER many times. It was decided to do this surgery as well as a complete hysterectomy after consulting with 2 surgeons etc. They removed 18 inches of my colon that was affected by this disease. Ive been home from the hosp less than a month now and am feeling a little better each day. I was terrified of having this surgery because of the fear of ending up with a colostomy bag which did not happen in my case. Im still dealing with some pain and food issues, right now I cant seem to find a happy medium of what to eat that will agree with me. I also feel you should avoid seeds, nuts, popcorn etc as I know these things have caused problems for me in the past. Im 46 yrs old and felt this was an old people disease...so maybe I am just and old people now... but I dont regret either surgery. The recovery part seems very long to me but considering what was done I guess it really isnt. Im not sure Ive answered any of your concerns but I dont regret having the surgery. Though Im not fully recovered yet I do feel better in many ways. It is a major undertaking but if you constantly suffer with attacks and hosp stays Id say surgery is the way to go. I was told many years ago I might need this surgery and I guess Im glad it was done while I still feel young enough to get through the pain and uncomfortable moments in recovery. If you have any specific questions I havent answered please feel free to ask. GOOD LUCK!
thanks for coming out and speaking with Us and Welcome to
