gallstones update

I saw the surgeon today and he has booked me in for 2nd Feb. I was offered next week, but that just doesn't work for me and then he is on holidays for Jan. I will just keep my fingers crossed I don't have anymore pain while I am waiting. He wasn't the most friendly or compassionate guy, but he is apparently very good so I suppose that's what matters most. He basically told me what I already knew from reading so there were no surprises.

Can any BTDT posters offer me any advice? He said I should be back to normal in a week, do you think I would need dh to take the whole week off? I have 3 children who need to get to school and kinder and so on.

Thanks,
Lisa.

Hi Lisa - I was back at work (desk job) 4 days after my surgery. I spent the 2 days post-op in bed. I don't have children.

If your dh is able to take time off work to help out I think it will make your recovery much easier. I did get tired a lot easier - and can not imagine having to cope with 3 little people.

I was told not to lift anything greater than 10 lbs for a couple of week so that may impact your decision.

I just looked at the Calendar - and Feb 2 is a Wed - maybe if dh even took the rest of that week off.

Everyone recovers at a different rate - some people are off work for 2 weeks. Don't rush it and don't push yourself.

If people offer to help - take them up on it!

Best of luck,

Jo

Hi Folks,

I'm very new to this board but had a couple of things to add to the subject line of gallbladders.

I had my gallbladder out on Oct 14th. I ended up taking off 9 days of work. (I'm a teacher).

I too was told not to lift anything over 10lbs for a couple of weeks and I was very tired and fatigued. I don't have any children but was still pretty wiped out.

I also wanted to add something just as a precaution. The tuesday after Thanksgiving, I had another attack. This was 6 weeks AFTER my gallbladder removal...the same pain. After many hours in the ER, a CT scan was taken and they determined that I had IBD..Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

I just had a colonoscopy yesterday and mostly have ulcerative colitis.

My whole point is to check and check to make sure your doctor has covered all bases. Because a (and I do mean one) gallstone was found, they didn't check for anything else. A lot of these conditions share the same symptoms.

I'm very frustrated and depressed that I've now had unnecessary surgery, pain, and loss of sick time at work. I just wish my doctor had checked for other things before surgery. I'm going through all of this and i'm only 35.

Good luck

Lisa, if you read my POST GALLBLADDER REMOVAL topic it may answer some questions for you.
I had my GB removed not even a month ago and FEEL WONDERFUL!
I work in the healthfield as a phlebotomist and most of the patients I also talk to never have any bad complications. One woman I work with did say she had loose stools for about five months after the removal. I did not and still have not experienced anything like that. Last weekend we had a family get together and I indulged into some greasy foods and my stomach did kinda act up, not bad. Just felt gasy and kinda quesy. It only lasted about twenty mins and was fine.

I am so sorry that you have had to go through all of that. In my reading I have seen that gallbladders can be removed when it turns out they weren't the problem. I hope you will learn to handle your condition so you can live as comfortably as possible.
