can anyone help with nausea?

For about 10 years now, I have "nausea attacks" if you want to call them. It can happen at any random time without notice. Around Thanksgiving of this year, I felt sick that whole holiday week. I ended up at the doctors- he either thought it was just something passing over me and that it was all in my head. But he did order me blood tests, which came back normal. Recently, one night I left work early, feeling the worst ever, I actually thought I was going to be sick. So the next day I went to my OB-GYN, and she made an educated guess that I can possibly have an ulcer, or it could be Gastritis. I am now on the medication Zantac. BUT- the thing is, I really really cannot handle puking. When I am nauseous, I tend to "not sit still", kind of anxious if you want to say, and some how scratching my skin (?) and afraid to puke. I just can't! I hope that writing all this out someone can have a similarity to what I have or have any advice. I would really love to hear it! Thanks.

Hi and welcome to the board.
I've had similar episodes nearly all my life. . . and I very very rarely vomit. Even when I know that I'd feel better after - I just can't 'let loose' (sorry if I'm grossing anyone out)
2 yrs ago I was dx w/ Gallbladder disease - the nausea was much worse in the time leading up to my diagnosis. Actually the 5 yrs prior to diagnosis I'd have these "nausea spells" that would wake my up in the middle of the night - and they were accompanied by very bad pain around my upper stomach (under the ribs), sweating so much I'd have to change my pajymas and doubled over on the bathroom floor. I actaully would force myself to vomit because that was the only thing that brought relief. it would only happen maybe twice a year and the Dr's never thought it worth investigating. In retrospect - had I pushed the issue and they came up with an early diagnosis I could have made dietary changes to possibly slow the process. Anyway, I digress.
Can you notice a connection between food and eating habits. In my case the things that cause nausea now are:
* waiting too long between meals - or skipping a meal
* eating a meal or snack that is high in fat. For me that would mean 2 slices of vegetarian pizza or more than a small hand full of nuts.
* consuming more than 25% of my calories from fat over a period of a few days. I can do it the odd time - but more than that and I feel nauseated. www.fitday.com has a free on line food journal to track such things.
* I am also sensitive to eggs (or foods containing eggs), bread (more than a couple of slices causes nausea & bloating) dairy products (a bit of milk in a latte is fine - but more causes bloat & nausea).
Not sure if that's been any help - please let us know how things are going,
Jo
I don't know if I can help, but I can definatly relate to what you are going through. Mine aren't really random as they happen everyday around the same times (usually early morning, suppertime, and around 2 am) where I get extremely nauseous and a few times to the point of almost throwing up. I, too am afraid of throwing up. When I was pregnant with my son I ate fried chicken and was throwing up the whole day so now I am afraid to eat chicken or turkey for that reason. The last 3 months were a living hell as I had severe heartburn every night. I have been through many tests including blood, ultrasound (came back that I had a thickened gallbladder wall and lots of polyps), barium swallow, hida scan, and next is the endoscopy. I have also been put on many drugs for acid reflux and GERD (am currently taking Pariet). The Pariet kind of keeps my nausea to a minimum, but it is still there and very noticeble. It's unfortunate that we have to suffer with this and I do hope that you find out what is causing it and get better. I am glad to be able to share experiences with others who don't think "it's all in my head".
I wish you luck!

I had the esophoscopy. It showed nothing wrong. My neasua is from Irittible bowel syndrome. I too have trouble with cronic neasua and heartburn. I am taking protonix for the heartburn and it's working well. For tempory relief of the neasua I use camomile tea or Celestial Seasonings Tummy mint tea. You can go to there web sight and find out where it's availible in your area. I also use peppermint tea but, that can cause worse heartburn in some people. I haven't figured out wheather it's the warm liquid or the tea that is helping. They aren't a cure all but, they can take the edge off so the neasua is not so debilitating. I hope you feel better soon.

Love,
I haven't had the endoscopy done yet(dr. is still setting up appt. for that). The barium swallow is basically to check how your esophogus, stomach look (ulcers, acid reflux, swallowing probs). I had to fast after midnight, they give you some granules to take with a tiny bit of water that will give you gas in your stomach (that was the worst part for me because I kept gulping and gulping and felt like I was gonna throw up..but luckily didn't), then they make you stand in this big machine and drink the barium (it tastes awful and is chalky) while they take pictures of your stomach and esophogus. Then you have to lie down while they take more pics. It's not that bad.
The Hida scan I was nervous as heck because I heard that alot of people get extremely nauseous when they inject the CCK. It is to test how your gallbladder is functioning. For this I had to get a needle in my arm that injected the "tracer". Then they took pictures with a machine that sits just above your chest every 15-20 mins for an hour. Then I had to get an IV in my other arm that slowly injected the CCK and they take more pics for 30 mins. that's it. I felt a little hot and nauseous while the CCK was being injected but nothing major. Unfortunately after I had the Hida Scan I had diarrhea for 3 days after (not to gross you out ;o))
The endoscopy I am a little worried about but my dad had it done and he said its nothing to worry about and that you won't rememeber a thing because they drug you up good. LOL
Well hope this helps...any ?'s feel free to ask!
Donna
