Don't know my problem
| Tue, 02-15-2005 - 9:32pm |
Hey there everyone,
I am almost 23 years old and have had stomach problems for years. I've been tested for a few things that have all been ruled out. A few months ago, my doctor recommened staying away from dairy. I did and it helped for a while but within a few weeks, the constant stomach aches returned. I can't seem to pinpoint what brings them on. I get really bad pain in the middle of my stomach and i usually have more than 3 BMs a day...and they're usually loose. I'm sorry if this is gross...but i'm very confused as to what is wrong with me. Do you think it could be chron's?? I've had this problem since early childhood and ocassionally the pains are so bad that i have to miss work....any suggestions?

Hi and Welcome shrtshtai,
Well
Hi Shrtshtai!
Welcome to the board!
Hi shrtshtai,
Sorry you're not feeling well. I agree with the others...you should have tests if possible. I've had problems with my digestion all my life. I'm 32. Over the years, there were countless occasions when I got stomach pains and loose stools for no apparent reason. It didn't happen daily, but it happened often enough that I knew something was wrong.
Then last spring it became a chronic problem. I started experiencing bloating, gas, loose stools, diarhea, etc. nearly everyday. Although I've never been tested (no insurance and cannot afford it), I did speak to a doctor in June. He suggested trying a wheat-free and dairy-free diet. Well, to make a long story short, I determined that I have a slight dairy allergy. (no allergy to wheat) Like you, cutting dairy out of my diet seemed to help for the first few weeks.
But then I started feeling bad again and I was totally confused. I thought about it alot and did some reading about digestive disorders. I realized that when I cut out dairy, I stopped eating yogurt. As you may already know, yogurt is loaded with live and active bacteria that the intestinal tract needs in order to function properly. Many people have plenty of these "friendly bacteria" in their intestines and don't even need yogurt...but I am NOT one of them. I started eating Soy Yogurt (non-dairy). After a few days, I noticed an improvement. Sometimes I get tired of the yogurt and slack off a bit. But guess what? I end up feeling bad again. Then when I go back to eating it regularly, my intestines function properly.
I don't know if this will help you, but it's something to try. You can even purchase these "friendly bacteria" in pill form in most health food stores. If you do, try to get the refrigerated kind. It works better.

Good luck. I hope you feel better soon.
