what's causing my tummy pain?

I have been fighting with abdominal pain for over a year now. I get sharp pains in my sides and stomach and sometimes chest. They did an ultrasound and found gallbladder sludge, but no stones. I went to a specialist and he thinks it is irratable bowel--but this makes no sense to me b/c i have no bowel problems. everything is normal--no diarhea or constipation, no gas or bloating and no cramping. just sharp pains every once in a while that get so severe that they have landed me in the ER twice! i have had everything else tested pretty much--kidneys, ovaries, i have had upper GI done, but no lower GI have had numerous x-rays and one ultrasound--everything normal except small about of GB sludge. My Dr. does not think that is could be gallbladder disease and keeps insisting it is IBS--are there tests they can do to prove either one?

I would get a second opinion. I had a thickened GB wall with polyps(no stones) and it caused me some pretty bad pain and nausea. I ended up getting my GB removed on the 29th of March and have felt alot better since. Still have little bouts of nausea but that's if I eat too much fat in one day. Alot of dr.s tend to blame stomach pain on IBS, acid reflux or it's "all in your head". I would look into seeing a gastroenterologist(sp?). They specialize in all sorts of digestive problems.

update concerning my tummy pain.....
I haven't been back to the specialist and i haven't been to a new one either. I thought i would give it a week or two and see what happens. Still having the pains. The other night the pain traveled into my back and it happened twice more since then. The doctor always asked me if i ever had back pain and i never had till now. What could this mean??

Lynn, thanks for your reply, I am so scared about this. I really don't want to have my gallbladder taken out. I am 20 years old and in college--i don't have time for surgery!!
I am hoping is is something that can be fixed w/o surgery--i think im gonna go see another specialist soon. I have been having back pains with this now too so im not sure what that means. also what exactly does a colonoscopy entail? and what does that check for exactly? I hope to hear back from you on this! Thanks, minna

Hey there,

It sounds like it could be your gallbladder.

thanks for your replies agian, everything helps. I just remembered something else to add though. I have had a bladder infection for about a month now. i have gone through two different antibiotics and it is still here!! i am soooooo sick of peeing every 5 minutes. I am going back to the doctor for it again tomorro, but i wonder could this have anything to do with my tummy??? I never connected the two before because i've been fighting the tummy pains for over a year and i've never had a bladder infection before this, so i just figured the two weren't related--maybe they aren't, but has anyone heard of anything like this before?? also i meant to put on my last message that i had more tests done and they ruled out my kidneys and also my ovaries/uterus/etc. so i figure that is good news cause who wants crappy kidneys right? and also I plan on having kids someday so ovaries are useful too. but it is still very frustrating not knowing for sure what it is. i have been trying so hard to keep a journal of everything i eat and how i feel etc., but i am just about the least organized person in the world and i keep forgetting. I will try harder though. Thanks again everyone for you feed back, minna

Just thought I should throw in a quick thought for you. I had a lot of stomach problems and in my early twenties as well. first and foremost, if you are drinking caffeine, esp. coffee stop and give it several weeks being disciplined about none at all and see if it makes a difference. This was a huge help for me.
But, mostly what I wanted to tell you was that I would get pain that would be bad enough in my stomach that it would radiate throughout my back as well. Often times I wouldn't be able to tell you if it was really my back or my stomach that hurt b/c it all sort of blurred together. so I wouldn't think this to be unusual.
Has a doctor put you on a soft-bland diet? I would think he would as most gastroenteroligists first start with putting you on a diet of only soft and bland foods to try and get your system to quiet down.
Well, just two cents for you. Good luck.
