I just got out of the hospital this afternoon. I went in for a test (sigmoidoscopy) Friday at 6:30am and the doc. said I have ulcerative colitis! He admitted me right then and there saying I was really very sick. I've never stayed in a hospital before at all and was having anxiety attacks too from being there (doc said). I was on a liquid diet from Thursday after my appt. to Monday when they said I could have toast. Hooked up to the IV since Tuesday. They said I'll be fine and don't know what caused it. They sent me home with five different med. pills that I have to take certain ones at certain times of the day for certain days... talk about counfsing!! I have to eat bland food like toast and chicken, etc. for awhile til the follow up appt. next Wednesday and see what the doc says. I can not believe this has happened to me! I was so scared and upset! I'm feeling better now...just light headed I guess from the meds or something.

Thank you ALL for your kindness and for caring so much and posting to me... I really appreciate your support.

I'm sorry to hear your son has it... it is awful. How is he doing now? Is he able to eat normally? Has it come back?

Thank you, Lynn, I really appreciate it.

This morning my primary care called me to set up follow-up appt. for next week. This is all so new and confusing to me. I thought I did not have to make the appt. since I was set up wtih specialist next week too. I just called her back to make the appt.

I'm on a bland diet (grits, pasta, chicken, no milk). I'm glad too I'm feeling better in the tummy area... just now all the meds make me feel weak/sleepy.

Thank you for caring.

Jane,my son is doing much better since his surgery. he can eat anything he wants. the only problem he has is the small bowel obstrsuciton he gets every once in a while. due to a part of the small intestine when they re-attatched it all has a thick end on it and sometimes it backs up. he still has very loose bowels and go 4 or so times a day. when he was on the prednasone at first when they tried to wean him off he got very sick again, his body needed that med to keep him feeling good. so you may find when they take you off some meds you might feel sick again, it will be trail and errror for awhile but if you have a good gi dr you will be fine,

Donna,
Thank you for alerting me to what may happen when I'm taken off the meds. I'm on prednisone right now as well as three other pills. I'll discuss this with my doctor. I would not have thought I'd feel bad again once off the meds. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and for letting me know how your son is progressing.

Just another quick update...
Today I'm feeling better (no pain/blood) just really liquidy stool if there is any stool in there at all several times a day now. Guessing it is from this special diet I'm on that I can hopefully go off by Wednesday night after my specialist appt. When I eat though I feel all rumbly down there. I'm off one or so meds tonight. Still taking prednisone and asecol then. Thank you for caring.

Jane, glad you are feeling better now that is great... hopefully you can go off the meds soon.. let me clarify something i said about my son having trouble getting off the prednasone and asacol. this was after is 1st initial digognosis when he was so sick afte letting it go for so long. when he ended up in the hosp in nov for 2 weeks he was let out too soon and ended up right back in for 2 more weeks over christmas. that time he got well enough that he was weaned off meds slowly with no problems . i think they caught yours early enough,. you should be fine.
take care

Thank you, Donna. I'll let you all know what the specialist says this week. Does or did your son have to take probiotics (a bunch of healthy bacteria for intestine like in yougurt but more in pill form)? The dietician at the hospital mentioned that... so far the specialist has not. It seemed more like the dieticians trying to sell things.
