Gall bladder surgery

Hi,
After three "attacks" in two weeks and an ultra sound indicating stones, my husband is scheduled to have a consultation with a surgeon in about a week. Until then he is being very careful about what he eats.
What kind of preparations are there before surgery, what kind of diet afterwards, and how long can he expect to be out of work ?

Thanks for any info.

Welcome to the Board PJ!

Everything depends on what type of surgery he is having.

He is scheduled August 9 and is on the waiting list if someone calls in.

Thanks,

I just had my gallbladder out 5 weeks ago. He should expect to feel miserable and sleep ALOT for the first week. After that it starts looking up and by the end of the second week i was starting to feel alot better. Stick to a low fat diet and be VERY careful about what you eat. Some people have really bad diarrhea afterwards, however there is medicine that the Dr can give you for that that will help the body with the bile and not making you sick.

Check out the thread with my name on it for more tales of my post surgery experience and let me know if i can help you with anything else!

Hi PJ - I had my gb out laproscopically on a Thursday morning - went home that evening. I was in bed most of the Friday & Saturday - started to move around more on Sunday - then back to work on Monday morning. I have a desk job - so no lifting or straining.

I was very bloated for a while - took 2 wks till I could wear my 'skinny jeans'.

I was very cautious about sticking to a healthy and low fat diet.

I tired easily for the months following the surgery - and if I had a work place that offered paid sick leave I likely would have taken a week off.

Wishing your hubby a quick and easy recovery,

Jo

Hi Jo,
Thanks. My husband is a police officer so I figure he may be out at least a week because of the uniform, gun belt, and vest. Also, you never know what may happen on any given day.

Thanks again,
PJ

Thanks for asking. I was going to post Monday but just too tired.
He is doing a lot better today. Felt pretty rough Monday and Tuesday.

They were able to do it laprascopic. The doctor said that my husband had been sick for awhile and has had a lot of attacks. He said the gb was stuck with a lot of adhesions and they had to cut away several layers of fat to get to it. He also said the gb wasn't emptying properly.
He didn't have gall stones but cholesterol polyps. There were no tumors but the doc said the liver was pale. He is still thinking fatty liver so I don't know if that's a bad or good thing. Anyway, he goes back Tuesday for a checkup. The nurse said they would call before then if something was up with the biopsy.
