acid reflux

I recently read an archived ariticle from Harvard Health that said some people have benefited from drinking raw potato juice 3 times a day. As I've been taking Prevacid for 8 mo. with no improvement, I'm ready to try an alternative remedy. Since a baked potato is the one food, I seem to be able to eat, I think this is worth a try. I need to know how much and how to extract the juice of a potato. Can anyone help me? Thanks

Hi and Welcome to the board!

Have you told your doctor that the Prevacid is not working for you??

When I told my doctor I did not beleive the Prevacid was helping, he gave me samples of Nexium to try for 10 days. I quit after 2 though and went back to the Prevacid. The Nexium seemed to make my stomach hurt even though both drugs work the same way. I've been managing my diet as well as taking the Prevacid, but after 8 months, I feel the change in my diet has been the most beneficial. My symtoms still occur daily even with the medication so I'm looking at alternative remedies that might provide some additional relief. Have you tried the aloe vera, and how do you take it?

Thanks for your welcome and input.

Hi! I appreciate your response. From what I've read, the potato will help neutrilize the acid. I had already discovered that a baked potato is the one food I could eat without a problem. Were you able to get your relux under control before you quit taking the Prevacid?

Have a great day.

That's what I've been thinking after 8 months. I really have not seen much difference that I contributed to the Prevacid although it may have healed my esophagus. I'm not yet ready to let the doctor perform those invasive tests to know. Most of my improvement has probably come from change in my diet which seems very limited now. I've been fortunate, and even at a menopausal age, weight has not been a big concern for me. I wish I could still add all those toppings to my potato, but sadly I've given those up too:)

How do you take the cider vinegar? I'm ready to try other remedies.

I'm new to message boards, but am discovering they are a wonderful way to learn.

Thanks. I'm going to give cider vinegar a try. I never realized what heart burn was like. The first few months I just felt pressure below my neck. Now I'm able to identify the burning sensation in my esophagus and feel the acid "crawling" up my throat as I heard it described. If I understand correctly, the way Prevacid and Nexium work is that they shut down the pumps that produce acid in your body. What I don't know why my body is still producing so much acid while on those drugs and while I'm so closely monitoring my diet. I'm battling the problem, but not yet ready to give in for medical tests. I'm such a coward:)

Please reconsider your decision to not see a doctor and have an upper endoscopy. It is really not that bad a procedure and the benefits are sooooo helpful. Your doc needs to see what is going on inside so he can make better decisions to help you. I don't mean to scare you but bad heartburn can lead to worse problems. I had my first one in February (on the same day as my first colonoscopy) and the doctor found erosive esophogitis at level 2 ( on a scale of 1-4). He put me on protonix for 60 days and did another endoscopy to check for healing and fortunately he saw some. He then took me off Protonix and put me on prescription Pepcid and most recently added Prilosec. I agree that it is frustrating to be on these meds and watch your diet and still have "attacks". I have GERD and a hiatal hernia and IBS and I'm still learning what helps and what doesn't. Have you eliminated carbonated drinks and caffeine? I did and I think that has helped a lot. Also do you have your bed on blocks so you're not sleeping flat? that is also a help. Coming to theses boards was a very wise decision for me as well - I have learned lots and somehow it is nice to know that what you're going through is "normal" for others with the same condition.

Take Care!
Sue
