acid reflux

I recently read an archived ariticle from Harvard Health that said some people have benefited from drinking raw potato juice 3 times a day. As I've been taking Prevacid for 8 mo. with no improvement, I'm ready to try an alternative remedy. Since a baked potato is the one food, I seem to be able to eat, I think this is worth a try. I need to know how much and how to extract the juice of a potato. Can anyone help me? Thanks

Wren, like you I don't like taking too many medicines. I've chosen to skip Prevacid the last two days and I can't say I see much difference. I did have a rough night the first night, but tried the vinegar with some Gatorade, and it did seem to help yesterday morning. Last night was some better. I thought about trying the vinegar again before I turned in, but was afraid to take it too close to retiring. Also, I picked up some ginger snaps at the grocery and tried those for my snack. They also seemed to help.
Anyway, I'm going to lay off the medicine for awhile longer, use the vinegar for pain and see if there is any change. I don't understand why I continue to have so much acid even though I'm watching my diet. I've given up so many of the fruits and vegtables I enjoyed and thought I was eating healthy:) Go figure - now it's potatoes I can eat! I appreicate you help.
Try taking notes on what is good and what make it act up
The Prevacid may have kept the attacks milder, but they certainly never went away. I drank the vinegar and Gatorade this afternoon. It seems to make me belch some. I do believe the Prevacid controlled gas because I had a lot of problem with that before I started taking the pills and now it seems to be recurring again.
I really don't feel stressed or at least not since I went to the doctor in Jan. and learned I wasn't having a heart attach:) I started watching my diet carefully in March and started giving up all my favorite spicy foods, chocolate and fruits. I'm feeling withdrawl! I had started drinking more skim milk in Jan. (just a glass two a day) or when this all began) and while I never thought it created a problem, I've dropped that from my diet too.
My doctor believes I might have a hiatal hernia, but unless I let him perform the endoscopy, I guess we won't know for sure. I'm just not sure I want to put myself through that yet. Right now I'm still coping. I keep hearing of others who have suffered this severly for awhile and then it has gotten better. I'm hopeful.
Sharing experiences is helpful. Thanks.
meme,
Can I take the gel from my aloe vera plant? That is about the only thing I grow well and I have several large plants around. How much should I use? My esophagus actually feels better now since I had been on the Prevacid for so long. I just continue to have reflux every day. Sometimes I know immediately that I have eaten something I shouldn't. Other times it seems to be almost when my stomach is empty that it occurs. I don't think it is quite as severe as it was. Sometimes before it would set in for a day or two rather than a matter of hours. Now I do have few hours a day I can sometimes forget about it:)
I've been taking a tblsp. of vinegar in a drink in the afternoon for relief and that has helped better than a Tums.
Thanks for the help and information.
I was was allergic to milk when I was a child, but have never had a problem as an adult.
I was on the Prevacid continually for 8 mo. except for a 5 day period when I consulted the doctor for diarrhea that lasted 10 days. He thought I had picked up a viral infection. Last week during my doctor visit, I discussed with him the fact that I did not think Prevacid was helping me any longer. He gave me a 10 day sample of Nexium and a month's prescription. I'm to call him next week and let him know how I'm doing. The Nexium seem to hurt my stomach and I only took it for two days. I don't want to just continue medicine especially when I don't see much difference with or without.
I know I should have the endoscopy, but with such a high deductible on our insurance, I am reluctant to have the test and have it really give me no answer. Besides I am a coward when it comes to procedures that require needles:) Really I am better than I was a few months ago. I have been keeping track of foods that bother me and isolating others that I am suspious of. I've just been surprised by some things like bananas and celery, but I'm learning. Sharing information is a great help. Thanks
Meme, that is 1 thing that iVillage is great with..
Meme,
Yes, you can take the gel from your aloe vera plant.
Now do we scrape it off the leaves to do this and do you know how much will do the trick
