Weird issues after gallbladder surgery

Hi All!
So, I recently had my gallbladder removed on May 13th. It's been 3 months and I am still trying to figure out what to expect from all this. The pain i had before the surgery is gone, which I'm grateful for.. but I have so many weird digestive issues now that I'm sooo confused as to what to do or expect. Depending on what I eat i am either running to the bathroom right after or extremely constipated for days... Lately it's more constipation than anything... If i eat salads it comes right thru me, but everything else seems to just stick around, and when i FINALLY do have a BM there's not much there and it's a difficult experience. I have gained probably 10-15 lbs since the surgery and I assume it's due to the constipation and my body holding everything in... I've tried Ex-Lax, that just makes me so Nauseous i could die... I'm doing fiber but that hasn't helped much.. I'm getting depressed about all the weight and bloating I have, my clothes are starting to not fit... UGH!
HELP PLEASE?!?!?!

Hi Beth - what does your doctor make of this?
When you say that you've increased fibre - how much are you consuming on a daily basis? Most of us don't consume enough to begin with - so an increase may just be bring you up to normal levels.
There is a food journal (free) at www.fitday.com - it is an excellent tool that can provide you & your doctor with insight to the problem. It takes a while to get used to it - but if you can commit to using the tool it will provide you with great information. You record all that you consume and it will give you the percentage of calories from fat / carbs / protien that you are eating. It will also provide an 'average weekly amount' and 'average monthly' amounts. These really give you a better picture since we don't eat the same things each day.
I can't imagine a weight gain of 10-15 lbs being due to constipations - I'd think if you were retaining that much - umm - well - you know - that you'd be in major distress and in the doctors office / emergency room.
Are you drinking enought water (ie 8 cups a day) that can sometimes contribute to constipation.
I had my gb out Feb/04 and it took at least a year till I could eat a piece of pizza without getting sick. (ie. running to the bathroom right away then waking up nauseated for 2-4 days after the indulgence.
Best of luck & please let us know how things are going,
Jo
