My name is Heather and I usually hang out with "July Summer sweeties" as I am First time mom. But yesterday i had my galbladder out and I have some pressing questions.
Does anyone know or take Bile salts after GB removal?
I heard they are helpful with fatty meals and reduce diahrea.
What about vitamins should i take extra ones?
anyways I really enjoy ivillage and this board is just as helpful as my mother-board.
Man, Its nice to meet people that have the same problems and pains as I do!

Hi and Welcome
Hi Heather - congrats on your recent arrival and welcome to the board.
Do you have diahrea after each meal - or just after fatty meals?
My Naturopath mentioned the bile salts - but because diahrea wasn't an issue for me unless I eat fatty foods - so I just do my best to stay on track. We didn't discuss the dose and other detials. It wasn't something he felt should be taken as a preventative measure. . . . only if the problem crops up and is unable to be managed by diet.
I am quite sensitive to fatty meals - I had a hamburger and about 6 french fries last month and that prompted pain & diahrea., (My gb was removed Feb/04).
As far as vitamins go - have you had to elimante certain foods from your diet? I don't digest meat, dairy or eggs so I supplement with calcium, Vit B-12, and Iron. I also take a multi-vitamin that contains a small amount of various vitamins and minerals.
If your gb has just left you then I'd suggest eating a very low fat diet and gradually introducing foods that are higher in fat.
There is a free on line calculator at www.fitday.com that will tell you what percentage of calories is coming from fat - everyone I know who's used it (including myself) is totally shocked at all the hidden fats we take in.
In the mean time - if you are experiencing diahrea - make sure you are drinking lots of water so you don't get dehydrayted. It will also help you cope with clearing you body of the Rx used duirng surgery.
Take care & please let us know how you are doing,
Jo
good Luck

Hello,
My son was also born in July but in 2004. Congrats on the little one.
I have heard of meds like Colestid(sp?) to help with bile salt diarrhea after GB removal but haven't heard of taking bile salts. Like someone else said I would stick to a low-fat diet for a while and then slowly introduce things back in to let your body adjust to not having a GB. Unfortunately I rushed into it by eating french fries about 3 days after surgery and had alot of nausea, cramping and diarrhea. I still deal with it today (and I had surgery in March 2005) if I eat too much fat in one day. Take it slowly and let your body heal/recover.

Thank-you for the response so quickly after the New Year.
I will be sure to ask the doctor about the meds :)
Happy New Year!

Hi Heather, I just had a baby in July too and am scheduled to get my gallbladder out this month. Why did you have to have yours out? Mine is not functioning properly, therefore causing me pain. The decision is up to me, and I hope I am making the right one...not sure how I am going to take care of my 6 months old during recovery.
Vicki
This is a big co-inky dink!
My baby girl is 6 months tomorrow and I had my GB out on DEC 30th
I am feeling great and Its only Jan 5th!
Make sure you have someone to watch the baby while you are recovering, I needed two or three days. I only had the Lap Cholo (with the scope and four incisions) ... It hurt the first couple days but I am well now and Its only been 6 days!
If you want anymore advice don't be shy to ask or email me :)
Heather
I love babies. Send your 6 month old to me, I'll take care of him while you recouperate.
