GB surgery scheduled-right decision?

Hi, for those of you that have had your gallbladder out, did you have to (gallstones) or was it your decsion? Mine is not functioning properly and causing pain (which a very bland, low fat diet helps) so I met with a surgeon yesterday and he thinks surgery would help me. My concerns are is there something else going on with me (also having pain on my left side, stomach?) and will this really help. Any experiences you would care to share would be appreciated. THANKS!

Have you had other testing done? Ex. endoscopy, ultrasound to see what is going on with your stomach as you say that you have pain on the left side as well. I think I would want to rule out other causes of the pain before I jump into surgery. Unfortunatly a GB can't be "put" back into a person once it's gone ;o). Some Dr.s are way too knife-happy and recommend surgery without first ruling out other causes. Alot of times a low/non-functioning GB can lead to symptoms like pain, nausea, etc. and is better to have it removed.
I didn't have stones but did have and inflamed wall with cholesterol polyps.

Good Luck in your decision! Keep us posted!

Thanks Donna! I was thinking the same thing in the back of my mind and you just gave me the push to call my dr again. He recommended I see a gastro doc before my surgery and possibly get scoped. I called the dr he referred me to but could not get in until the end of the month, so found a different one and go in next Tuesday to talk to him. I do still think I need my GB out, but would like to know what my body is up to before they start yanking organs out.

Vicki,

glad you are getting the second opinion.
