I just found this board,so this my first post and I was wondering if this board can help me figure out whats up with me, hopefully someone else knows what Im going thru. Im 47,female. I have IBS and was diagnosed with it 10 yrs ago. It started off just diahhea everyday due to what the doc says was stress brought on by dealing with my terminally ill father. I had lost 30 lbs and wasnt getting better.

I started getting sharp pains occasionally in my right abdomen area that would last about an hour, over the past 5 its become more common and now it has become quite frequent ( at least once a week)only now the pains last all day. These pains are so bad that I cant stand up straight or even wear pants, I have to wear sweats when this occurs. For the first time in 12 yrs I had to call in sick because the pains were so severe. Doc says its normal for IBS. Anyone else out there have these same problems or is it time to find a new doc?

thank you for any tips or suggestions.

Welcome.

I am sorry that you are having such pain.

Have you had any tests to see what is going on --- CT, ultrasound, etc. or is your Dr. just saying that because you were previously dx with IBS?

If he is, then I would ask him to start off with the above non-invasive tests to see if anything might show up. If he refuses and just poo poo's you off --- then definitely time for a new Dr.

Keep us updated.

If you go to a GI specialist, and you have all those tests, and they still show nothing, try a pancreatic/sphincter of oddi specialist. You symptoms sound a lot like chronic panc. The weight loss, the slow progression of pain, the severity of pain, and the diarrhea. Most of the time, pancreatitis pain is in the middle upper abd., just below the breast bone, but it varies, and I always had a lot of pain on the right side because of the sphincter of oddi disorder. Pancreatitis is not common, but it tends to be diagnosed as IBS or other things for years before it's found to be the pancreas.
Does what you eat affect your pain? And when you get that severe pain, how do you get it to stop? Unfortunately, a lot of the gastro intestinal disorders have some of the same symptoms, and symptoms can vary from person to person so it's hard sometimes to diagnose GI disorders. I think the Drs. tend to start with the more common ones, like IBS, and go from there. Pancreatitis can be very difficult to diagnose because there may not be any tests to prove it, that's why you need to see someone who specializes in it, IF...nothing else pans out.
Good luck to you,
Let me know how food affects your pain and what you do to ease the pain if you can.
