food poisoning (TMI)

Before you read just be warned-this posting may contain TMI. Tuesday afternoon my fiance at an egg sandwich at a local deli for lunch, he said it wasn't fully done but he ate it anyway-he has learned his lesson-trust me. He said he felt a little weird, but thought it would go away. About an hour later he got really bad stomach cramps out of nowhere and had to make a run for the bathroom at work and was there for 45 minutes before he could move. He had diarrhea a few times Tuesday and some vomiting on Wed. When the diarrhea kept getting worse I finally talked him into going to the doc on Thursday. The doc suspected salmonella, but didn't give him antibiotics-told him to take immodium until things got a little better (told him it should take 24 hours or so) then to stop taking it and eat light and if he's not better then come back in. He took the immodium Thursday and felt a little better, but still a mild case of the runs. So yesterday afternoon, he quit taking it and was in the bathroom like 6-7 times last night with cramps, a gurgling stomach and severe diarrhea, it is literally like pure liquid running right through. Does anyone have any experience with this? He is doing a decent job at staying hydrated, but is losing a lot of weight, we are going on day 5 now and he feels okay when he is not on his throne, but as soon as he eats or drinks bring on the bathroom. It is Saturday now and of course the doc is away for the weekend-should we just ride it out? We've both had food poisoning before, but never still this bad after 5 days, just looking for some other stories to see if I should be as worried as I am. Thanks!

Sounds like he had a nasty bout of food poisoning.

Hi, Thanks for the advice and the welcome. We ended up calling a friend of ours who is a doctor. She recommended that he really push the immodium (two at once)into his system just for a few hours to get things under control and then take it from there. According to her this type of reaction is not un-normal in a salmonella case, it is apparently a nasty little germ. I'm with you-I've had food poisoning before and this seemed a little extreme, but I guess it is okay as long as he is staying hydrated and it starts to clear up after about 7 days (we are on day 6 now I think)! The Florence Nightengale in me is starting to wear off :) Long story short her advice seemed to work. He started spending more of his time in the living room instead of the bathroom as of about yesterday evening. Today has been even better, his stomach is still rolling around, but he hasn't been stuck in the bathroom all day and he has been eating-lightly, but a decent amount. Now the last step is to see if he can keep up the progress once the last immodium he took wears off. Keep your fingers crossed! Thanks again and watch out for those undercooked eggs!! I'll keep you posted.
