IBS and Prozac
| Fri, 03-17-2006 - 11:52am |
I have been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome for almost 10 years. I never saw a gastro-doctor (can't spell all of it) until today, just always used my primary. Well instead of giving me what I have been taking for 10 years, hyocosimine, she put me on prozac. It is only 10 mgs a day and she said it is showen to help a lot of people with IBS. I know prozac is used for depression and she even stated clearly I am not depressed but I do stress out since most of my symptoms occur during the work week. Has anyone else taking Prozac for their IBS and has it helped? I am going to try it and see her again in a month but I was just wondering if someone else tried it and their experieince with it. I am just having a hard time getting past the "depression" part of prozac.

Hi and Welcome aboard!
Antidepressants are comprised of several classes of drugs (such as SSRI antidepressants
If your IBS is due to stress, I bet Prozac would work. Interesting.
I have IBS and it's usually controlled with calcium and metamucil.
Good luck and let us know if it works.

Hi Lucky!
I am glad to hear that your IBS is controlled by the metamucil and calcium.
Hi. I take both calcium carbonate and calcium citrate. I have also decreased my alcohol intake.
These were the things that helped the most. Oh, and the metamucil. I don't take any peppermint as it causes me reflux. But really, I don't do anything else.
