Greed - kick backs from pharmaceutical companies, etc etc.
My friend's brother was recently diagnosed with lung cancer that has spread to his liver. There is a drug being tested that his doctor said he'd love to start on him - however it is not on the market and they are only accepting certain patients in to the trial. Well - here's the kicker. They want patients that are diagnosed with ABC type of cancer in XYZ organs - however they want the ones who have lived passed the 6 month mark.
Given his health status he was given 6 months to live. Sometimes people live longer than that - but it's very rare. Those people (when left untreated or go on to use existing treatments) can live up to 3 yrs - a very few even longer. So the drug company wants people who have a good chance of living to be the test cases for their drug. . . .thus the drug looks good and share prices go up.
That is my rant of the day about the pharmaceutical industry!
