Cutting out Dairy

I'm trying to eliminate Dairy from my diet. I LOVE cheese. Are there any good alternatives to dairy cheeses out there? I also would love to know the best soy milk to cook with (mashed potatoes have to have milk).

Thanks

HI - I eliminated dairy for a 2 month period a while back. I didn't think it made a difference at the time - but when I reintroduced it I really had a reaction (bloating, gas, just didn't feel well if you know what I mean).

I love cheese and butter is (was!) my best friend.

I've tried some of they Soy Cheeses - but if you are expecting it to taste like cheese you will be disappointed. I've added it to dishes that would involve melted cheese - and it's fine - or sliced into very small chunks in a salad. I tried a grilled soy-cheese sandwich and it was awful - like melted plastic (but that's just my opinion).

I have a gf who loves the Soy cheese and eats it plain - but to me that's not appealing.

I don't care for soy milk. I prefer rice milk. I don't drink milk - just use it on cereal.

I've tried soy latte's but don't care for them.

All personal preference - try and see what you enjoy.

Jo

Thanks so much for all the info. I had another friend tell me to use rice milk for cooking. I'm trying to get rid of as much dairy as possible because I've always had problems with it (from birth). I've recently been diagnosed with IBS and I'm fed up with the trips to the bathroom, bloating, cramping, etc. . . So I'm trying to adjust my diet to help. The meds the doc gave me, I hate. I should go back to tell her but just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Glad to have found you guys!

Just a suggestion.... Have you thought of trying goat products? I understand that most people, including children, that are sensitive to cow products have no problems with goat products.

I am not a big goat product fan. But, I do know that if you have a farmer's market near by or better yet, a goat dairy you can get some really good cheese flavored with herbs. My 13 yr old DD is a huge goat fan. We've learned that fresher is the best. And that you need to keep goat's milk very cold from the time you buy it until you put it in your frig it needs to stay cold. The owner of our local goat dairy told us to store the milk on the bottom shelf in the frig, it stays colder there.

Best wishes!
